Just days after launching its new flagship smartphones, iPhone 8 and iPhone X (pronounced iPhone 10), Apple has released a new update for its operating system – iOS 11.

The new update in now available for iPhone and iPad users around the world, and promises a lot of new features like Augmented reality, a more humanlike Siri, and new whistles and bells in the Camera app. We talked all about the new features here.

These new features come pre-installed on the new iPhone 8 and iPhone X, but if you’re not ready to spend over N359,000 on an iPhone, here’s how you can make your old iPhone look and feel new by upgrading to iOS 11.

Back up your iPhone

The first thing you’ll need to do before porting to the new iOS 11 is to back up your files. You can simply upload your data to iCloud. This automatically secures your contacts, settings, and messages. However, it’s pretty costly and won’t save things like app preferences. Another option is to back up with iTunes, which will save all your basic data, including your apps and login details. Connect your iPhone to your computer, open iTunes, select your device, and choose the Back Up Now option under Manual Back Up and Restore.

Power up your iPhone

Next thing you should do is to get your iPhone juiced up. The upgrade process takes some time, and you won’t want your battery dying off during the upgrade.

Free up space on your iPhone

With your iPhone fully charged, you can now proceed to making room for the upgrade. You’ll need about 2GB of free space to download the new OS. To create space, you can delete photos, video, and apps you no longer use. To make things easier, upload your photos to Google Photos then clear the photos on your camera roll to free up memory.

Upgrade… Upgrade… Upgrade

If you’ve followed all the steps listed above, you’re good to go. You should get a notification once the iOS 11 update is available, but if you can’t wait, go to the General tab in the settings app and select Software Update to start the download.
