Deputy Governor of Imo, Prince Eze Madumere was on Monday impeached by 19 out of the 27 members of the assembly despite his efforts to stop the process through the court.

Speaker of the House, Acho Ihim, said the impeachment followed the outcome of a report of a seven-man panel constituted by the Chief Judge of the state to investigate allegations of gross misconduct levelled against him, including three-month absence from work without reasons, failure to perform constitutional duties like attending state executive and state security council meetings.

Other allegations includes failure to attend meetings with the Governor and other government functionaries as well as an alleged concealment of felonious act in the United States.

Eight members of the Benue House Of Assembly on Monday served an impeachment notice on Governor Samuel Ortom.

Led by the impeached Speaker, Hon. Terkimbi Ikyange, the lawmakers who are members of the All Progressives Congress (APC), told journalists that the Assembly has commenced impeachment proceedings against the governor over allegations of diversion of state funds and abuse of office.

The lawmakers added that 15 of their colleagues were suspended for six months.

The Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki and Speaker, House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, have described the move by eight members of the Benue House of Assembly to impeach Governor Samuel Ortom as an illegality that must be condemned by all lovers of democracy, at home and abroad. 

In a joint statement on Monday, the National Assembly leaders, condemned what they termed as a situation where 22 other members (the majority), are kept away from the Assembly Complex by the police, urging President Muhammadu Buhari to call the police to order and stop them from being used to achieve political purposes.

“The situation in Benue State House of Assembly has grave implications for the nation’s democracy and it represents a throw-back to the period of dictatorship in our country,” the statement added.

The Kano House of Assembly on Monday impeached its Speaker, Alhaji Abdullahi Ata and two other Principal Officers.

The house immediately re-elected Alhaji Kabiru Rurum, Ata’s predecessor who had resigned in July 2017 over allegations that he collected N100m bribe from a prominent businessman to scuttle the probe of Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II.

Ata was impeached over allegations of corruption, late coming and failure to carry other principal officers along in running the affairs of the house.

State Coordinator of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Plateau, Abdulsalam Alhassan has said no member of the corps serving in the state would be posted to volatile areas.

Alhassan who disclosed this to newsmen on Monday in Mangu, said the measure became necessary to ensure that no corps member became a victim of attacks on rural communities, adding that the NYSC was collaborating with various security agencies to keep constant surveillance on corps members’ lodges across the state.

“Aside volatile areas, we shall not post corps members to villages that are not accessible because we need to keep in constant touch with them throughout the service year,” he said.
