Ekiti State Governor, Ayo Fayose on Sunday told his predecessor and current Minister of Mines and Steel Development, Dr. Kayode Fayemi not to celebrate yet, describing Fayemi’s victory, at the rescheduled governorship primary of the All Progressives Congress held on Saturday,  as pyrrhic.

Fayose went on to thank the APC delegates that picked Fayemi for doing him a great favour, saying they had made his task and pain of defeating an APC candidate much easier with the choice of Fayemi as their candidate for the July 14 gubernatorial poll.

In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Idowu Adelusi, Fayose said “the former Ekiti state governor’s victory has only positioned him to suffer a worse and more debilitating defeat than the one he dealt him in  2014.”

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has won the Chairmanship and Councillorship election in Zangon Kataf Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

The All Progressives Congress(APC) however won Soba, Zaria, Lere, Ikara, Makarfi, Birnin Gwari, Giwa, Kagarko, Kudan, Igabi and Kajuru local councils. The results in other councils are still being awaited.

The Kaduna State Local Government Polls is the first time a state has adopted the use of electronic machines to conduct elections in Nigeria.

The Federal Government has commenced the process of managing high water flows from rivers and areas prone to flooding, within the country as a result of the rainy season.

Minister of Water Resources, Suleiman Adamu, disclosed this during his presentation of the 2018 Annual Flood Outlook by the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agencies in Abuja.

According to him, “part of the measures put in place to manage flooding included construction of Kashimbilla dam designed to contain eventual break of Lake Nyos, reservoirs, artificial lakes and buffers, barriers, irrigation facilities and other structural controls.” Other measures included: “flood mapping, flood vulnerability studies and flood sensitisation and awareness campaigns,” he said.

The Federal government has assured that it will do everything possible to bring to justice all those behind the killing of a Nigerian diplomat, Habibu Almu in his official quarters  in Khartoum, Sudan on Thursday 10th May, 2018.

In a statement by the Spokesperson of the Foreign Affairs Ministry, Dr. Tope Elias-Fatile, the government described the death of the Immigration Attaché I, “as sad and a great loss to the country”. While sympathizing with the family of the deceased, Elias-Fatile assured that FG is working with officials in Sudan to ensure that all those found culpable are brought to justice.

Although report said the police were investigating the incident, but provided no details on how he died, there are speculations that the envoy may have been assassinated.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has announced the appointment of Mallam Mele Kyari,as Nigeria’s National Representative to the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).

The Corporation disclosed this in a statement by its Group General Manager, Group Public Affairs Division, Ndu Ughamadu, on Sunday in Abuja. It noted that the new position required Kyari to lead Nigeria’s team to the OPEC Economic Commission Board (ECB) which precedes the bi-annual meetings of the OPEC Ministerial conference.

The ECB reviews the global oil markets and makes input from the perspectives of the individual member countries.

Gabriel Jesus’ late winning goal for Manchester City against Southampton on Sunday saw the English Premier League champions finish the season with 100 points, a new record making them the first team to complete the achievement.

Pep Guardiola‘s side had already secured the record for most points in a single season in the English top flights heading into the final game at St Mary’s.

Guardiola’s side ended the campaign with a host of records to their name. City have won the league with the biggest ever margin by finishing 19 points ahead of Manchester United, having also collected the most wins in a season and scored the most goals, with Jesus’ effort making it 106 in the league. Meanwhile, De Bruyne’s assist sees him finish top of the assist chart with 16.

Liverpool Star, Mohamed Salah has scooped up yet another award after his fabulous first season with Liverpool as the Egyptian striker was named the Premier League’s Player of the Year on Sunday.

Salah had already won the PFA Player of the Year voted for by his fellow players, as well as the Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year award and Liverpool’s own Player of the Year prize.

The 25-year-old who moved from AS Roma last year scored against Brighton on Sunday to take his goal tally to 32 goals in 37 league matches, and to break the Premier League record of 31 goals in a 38-game season . Salah has scored 44 goals in 50 games in all competitions for Liverpool this term.

At least five students were killed, eight injured and twelve others were reported missing on Sunday after a bridge collapsed at a tourist site in Pakistani Kashmir, officials said, adding there was little hope of finding survivors.

The bridge, which overlooked a ravine in mountainous Neelum district, collapsed after some three dozen university students walked across it to view a waterfall.

A local police official Saleem Durrani who confirmed the toll said that “the authorities had posted a warning near the bridge, telling visitors to walk across it in small numbers because it was only designed to accommodate five people at a time.”

A family of six — a mother and father, two daughters aged 9 and 12, and two sons aged 16 and 18 —  staged suicide bombings at three Indonesian churches during Sunday services, killing at least 13 people and wounding dozens in attacks claimed by the Islamic State group.

The bombings at the three churches; Kristen Indonesia Diponegoro Church, Surabaya Centre Pentecostal Church and Santa Maria church were Indonesia’s deadliest for years, as the world’s biggest Muslim-majority country grapples with homegrown militancy and rising intolerance towards religious minorities.

South Africa has taken over direct administration of North West province where corruption allegations have led to violent protests and calls for the regional premier to resign.

The province’s regional premier, Supra Mahumapelo (a political ally of former President Jacob Zuma) whose administration has been accused of corruption and the misuse of state funds – accusations he denies has refused to step down but went on leave.

The decision to intervene was taken by President Cyril Ramaphosa, who has made the fight against corruption a priority. According to South Africa’s Sunday Times reports, this is the first time the national government has taken control of an entire provincial administration.
