Much like Trump’s America, President Buhari’s approach to any public scandal is a mash of outright lies and public propaganda. Handlers of information at the federal level are guilty of this and the Minister of Information aptly named Lai Mohammed has been particularly guilty of this duplicity. However it seems it has permeates every nooks and cranny of the government and they are ready to outdo each other.
Monday, June 3, 2018 it was reported by all news media that mobile police officers went on rampage in Borno protesting six months unpaid allowances. Channels TV covered the protest from beginning till the end, with extensive video footage shared online for Nigerians to observe. In the video some of the officers were seen wearing masks while others were not. At intervals they shot into the air as a sign of protest. Some also spoke with Channels TV correspondents, stating their grouse against the police force and the IGP as a person, in fact, one of them called the IGP a thief while rounding up his statement.
The Police officers who protested, did so without a permit and as such broke the law. They fired deadly weapons, disrupted the public peace and scared citizens. But like everyone else, the incompetence of Nigeria’s government trickles down and frustrates even the most powerful. This is best illustrated by the statement released by the force PRO CSP Jimoh Moshood. According to him, the officers were not protesting; rather they went to make enquiries concerning their unpaid allowances. This statement by the force PRO has once again brought the force under ridicule as it is evident Jimoh Moshood was lying.
And even if the officers went to make enquiries as stated by Jimoh Moshood, why should mobile policemen in war torn Borno be owed for one month not to talk of six months. This is clearly a failure of leadership at the force headquarters. In a country where we have public officials doing their jobs as expected neither will Jimoh Moshood issue such statement as its clearly an insult on all Nigerians neither will the officers be owed for six months. It’s a clear evidence of leadership failure in the Nigerian Police Force.
