Rochas Okorocha and Harvey Weinstein have something in common and it’s their penchant for losing and attracting ridicule. Meanwhile, Nigerian-born Chelsea forward, Eniola Aluko has the last laugh after facing racial abuse at the hands of her coach.

From last week’s biggest newsmakers, here are the winners and losers:

WINNERS

Gani Adams

Life will no longer be the same for OPC National Coordinator, Otunba Gani Adams as he now holds one of the most powerful traditional titles in Yoruba land.

Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III, declared Adams the 15th Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yoruba land, a title previously held by late businessman and politician, MKO Abiola and late Premier of the Western region, Samuel Ladoke Akintola before him.

The Alaafin and the new Aare spent the most part of last week dispelling rumours and convincing naysayers about the new appointment.

Eniola Aluko

Arguably the biggest winner from last week, the Chelsea and England footballer stood before a Digital, Culture, Media and Sport committee hearing and told of how she had been racially abused and bullied while she played for England’s women team in 2015.

She had accused the manager of England’s Women team at the time, Mark Sampson of telling her “to ensure her Nigerian relatives did not bring the Ebola virus to a match at Wembley”.

Aluko’s story remained consistent at the hearing and got the Football Association (FA) to rule Sampson guilty and subsequently getting fired. The FA also issued an apology to Aluko.

Wizkid

The Starboy has been consistently winning on all fronts in recent months and to add to his growing list of victories, Wizkid was nominated for BET’s 2017 Soul Train Awards.

The big deal is that Wizkid did not appear in an international category or anything like that. He was nominated in the Best Dance Performance category alongside Bruno Mars, DJ Khaled, Solange and Chris Brown for his 2017 hit track, Come Closer.

This collides with his Best International Act nod for the MOBO Awards, a category where he contends with the likes of Jay-Z, Cardi B and Kendrick Lamar.

Akinwumi Adesina

Nigeria’s former Minister for Agriculture was named the 2017 World Food Prize Laureate for his work in improving the availability of seeds and financing to African farmers.

The award comes with a $250,000 cash prize which Adesina pledges to use in financing African youth in agriculture.

It’s a good win for all of us, we believe.

LOSERS

Rochas Okorocha

There’s no way you missed the Okorocha-statue drama last week.

Nigerians did not slack in calling the Imo state governor raving mad for erecting a statue of South African president, Jacob Zuma, in whose country Nigerians are being maimed in xenophobic attacks.

Days after the social media outrage, Okorocha revealed we had only just seen the tip of the iceberg as he was not near done erecting statues. He also declared he owed no one an apology for any of his actions and that was how he became the most despised person in the country.

Kebbi’s Accountant General

Off to prison for 70 years.

The Accountant General of Kebbi state, Mohammed Dakingari was found guilty of N1.6 billion fraud and was sentenced by an Appeal Court on Friday.

Here’s the good part. He had earlier been let off by the state’s High Court but the EFCC appealed his acquittal and boom! he walks off to prison.

Harvey Weinstein

The world’s biggest loser this season remains entertainment mogul, Harvey Weinstein.

12 Years A Slave actress, Lupita N’yongo joined the very long list of women who have gone public with their experience of sexual assault at the hands of the bulky man.

To top his many losses, Weinstein was expelled from the board of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (Oscars). No one really wants to be associated with a sexual predator.
