Niger Delta militancy: Temporary ceasefire falls apart as hostilities resume

Niger Delta militants

The temporary peace agreement between the Federal Government and Niger Delta militants was, over the weekend, blown apart following the destruction of oil installations by the Niger Delta Avengers who had earlier expressed their grievance on the way the government breached and manage the peace process.

According to Vanguard, a source said that the federal government wasn’t serious about restoring peace to the oil rich region as nothing has been said over the proposed dialogue with stakeholders in the region.

The source went ahead to say that the government had gone on to repair destroyed pipelines despite warnings from the militants that the pipeline shouldn’t be repaired.

On its part, the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) said that the resumption of hostilities between both side was regrettable. They, however, chastised the President for not taking any tangible step towards resolving the issue since he returned from his vacation in the UK.
