A dismissed  police officer was recently apprehended by the operatives of the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad, Lagos for allegedly defrauding the Nigeria Police Force of N 40 million over eight years.

According to reports from Vanguard, the man, Victor Afamefuna Banor was initially dismissed from the police force, after which he resorted to forging personal emolument records which included his last pay certificates. He forged these documents with fake names, ranks and force numbers.

 He submitted these fake documents to the Lagos, Edo, Cross River, Kaduna, Kogi, Ogun and Akwa Ibom states police commands from which he was able to cart away  N40 million from the purse of the Nigeria Police.

It was further alleged by the Lagos police division that the suspect used the fake documents to promote himself from the ranks of  ASP, DSP to SP  at any time he received information on promotions in the a Nigeria Police.

The Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of FSARS Lagos, DCP Chris Ezike, after receiving an  intelligence report on the fraudulent activities of the suspect , directed a team, led by DSP Solomon Igwe to investigate the matter.

The Nigerian police prosecutor, Supol Charles Odii, told the court that Banor committed the alleged offence between 2006 and 2014 in seven police commands in Nigeria and this is punishable under the  Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act, 2011, Advanced Fee Fraud and Fraud Related Offences Act, 2006 and the Miscellaneous Offences Act, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.

The case has however been adjourned to May 4 and 5 for trial by the presiding Judge, Justice J. Abang.  Meanwhile, the suspect remains in prison custody.
