The Kwara state government has stepped in to corroborate Senate President Bukola Saraki’s claims regarding pension payment from the state after his two-term tenure as governor.

In a press release by the Secretary to Kwara government, Alhaji Sola Isiaka Gold, “The said pension has been duly remitted to his account, like other former Governors’, since he left office but when via a letter dated 20th August 2015 addressed to the state government, Dr Saraki requested that the payment of pension to his account be stopped and the amount already credited to the account be refunded to the Government, the State Government promptly complied.

The Government not only stopped the payment of the said pension, the amount already paid into Dr. Saraki’s account since he left office was deducted from the money owed to him as well as his other outstanding lawful entitlements.”

Senator Saraki had been challenged by a socio-political group, Kwara Mass Movement and Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) to return all the monies he received as pension  and houses built for him by the state. Saraki stopped being governor in 2011 but was said to have collected pension till 2015. Upon the publication of that allegation, the Senate President moved to deny the claims: “No, I’m not collecting pension; the moment I saw that allegation, I wrote to my state to stop my pension.”
