[The Sexuality Blog] Here’s a quick and easy way to report domestic and sexual assaulters

Just four numbers, which you can type in less than a second. Is this what useful innovation looks like?

The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Team has been one of the big rights in Governor Ambode’s tenure at the helm of the nation’s economic centre, his social injustices towards the inhabitants of Lagos’s indigenous fishing villages nearly marring all the good he does/could do. However, the DSVRT has proven itself yet and again, providing counselling for victims of rape and abuse, pursuing and punishing perpertrators and generally being bad ass.

But one of the hurdles they have faced, is actually getting people to come in and report cases. The DSVRT has its offices on the Lagos mainland which naturally presents logistic problems for a quick response team.

The Task Force is seeking to rectify that by bringing in more personnel, and a new mobile shortcode “6820” as a way for people to report cases of domestic violence, assault and rape directly from their phones. This will go a long way to reduce the fears that have been associated with reporting abuse.

We still have to wait a while to see if it cottons on, but congratulations DSVRT for pushing this channel.

You rock!
