According to a statement released by the party’s spokesman, Kola Ologbondiyan on Wednesday, the PDP in condemning what it described as an “act of lawlessness and callousness,” expressed shock that the harmless victim of the unprovoked assault is said to be a nursing mother, who ought to be protected.
“The PDP, as a law-abiding and upstanding party, detests and completely condemn such act of lawlessness and callousness as exhibited in the video and will therefore never condone it,” it read.
Stressing that the action was the personal conduct of an individual which has no bearing with the culture of the party, it added that no responsible person will condone such an attitude.
The opposition party further announced that its National Working Committee (NWC) has commenced investigation into the matter and summoned the lawmaker in line with the provisions of the Constitution of the PDP and code of conduct for its members, while assuring Nigerians that it will always stand on the side of justice.
“In the same vein, the party has taken note of the immediate action taken by the @NGRSenate. The PDP, at all levels of engagement, is reputed for her utmost respect and commitment towards the rights, safety and wellbeing of our citizens, particularly our women and cannot tolerate any callous assault on any Nigerian.
Similarly, the Presidential candidate of the party in the 2019 general election, Atiku Abubakar has advised the erring Senator to issue a public apology and turn himself in to the police as a way of showing example expected of a young leader.
In a tweet by the former Vice President on Wednesday, he described the alleged assault video as sad and inexcusable, while calling on the Police to ensure the law takes its full course.
I advise him to publicly apologize, voluntarily go to the police and show a good example expected of a young leader. I also call on our party, the @OfficialPDPNig to take necessary disciplinary action and the @PoliceNG to ensure the law takes its full course. -AA
