[The Injustice Blog] Lest Lagos falls into an avoidable health crisis

The Governor of Lagos, Akinwunmi Ambode government has invested a lot of funds into infrastructural development in the twenty local government and the thirty-seven local council development Authority in Lagos and, has received kudos from many.

However, his achievements may soon be clouded by an impending health crisis that is gathering storm in the state health sector.

Vanguard Newspapers on October 31, 2017, reported an ongoing brain drain in the Lagos health sector which has seen the exit of over eight hundred doctors in two years of this present administration. This is a little bit worrisome or what’s a Megacity with a failed health sector?

According to the Chairman, Lagos Medical Guild, Dr Saliu Oseni, at his place of Primary Assignment which happens to be the General Hospital in Ikorodu: more than thirty Doctors have left their job in 2017 alone. The figure is different from those that retired.

What could have caused this mass exit in a state reputable for prompt payment of salaries, allowances, pensions and other emoluments? It was revealed that the state government has stagnated their promotions for thirteen years, a status quo that has been maintained by the Akinwunmi Ambode Administration.

Also, there is an allegation of non-implementation of CONMESS salary scale, among other issues by the Lagos government.

At this juncture, it’s time for common sense to prevail and not a time for mudslinging between the two parties for the sake of hapless Lagosians. The Lagos government needs to step in and do the needful expected of them.

This brain drain is coming at a time the United Nations in its recent report states that “Africa needs 11 million more doctors, nurses and teachers by 2030 to prevent a social and economic disaster that could propel millions to migrate“.

The Doctors that are needed to prevent the economic disaster are already leaving the health sector due to poor working conditions. The situation where a Doctor attends to over eighty patients daily has putS the Doctor under unnecessary pressure and has thus make his work environment in conducive and uncomfortable for him.

For a wealthy Lagos, we need a healthy Lagos.
