Ebenezar Wikina: Poetry is boring

by Ebenezar Wikina

This is poetry

This is the good old boring poetry

But before you shut your eyes and start snoring

I just want to remind you that poetry is still boring

Poetry is like photosynthesis

Because this black sun, is painting good pictures with sentences

That feed your six senses

Poetry is boring

With your eyes as collateral

I’m borrowing a few words from Oxford

To write lines you’ve never seen before like an ox driving a ford

You better take your circle of friends to the stadium and market square

Stay there and grab a chair

Because many people just like Oil mill and Oshodi market day

Are struggling to see poets recite here

Poetry is wearing a black suit performing at your wedding reception

See the standing ovation

Poetry is at your naming ceremony

No longer broke with cheap pieces, poets now see real money

Poetry is glossy

It’s on everybody’s lip

They like her figure eight of speech

Like every lady’s hip

Poetry is boring

I’m so glad, finally, poetry is boring

Boring DEEP DEEP DEEP

holes into entertainment

But if you thought I said: poetry is *yawns* boring

Then you don’t know what I meant

This Spoken Word piece was first written and performed on Rhythm93.7FM Port Harcourt on World Poetry Day 2012. I wish all poets out there a great poetry day. I hope I start writing poetry again soon
