In an attempt to reduce non-performing bank loans in the banking sector, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has issued guidelines that authorise banks to debit outstanding loans and accrued interest from the bank accounts of loan defaulters across the Nigerian banking system.
The details were disclosed in a circular issued by CBN to all banks and other financial institutions tagged ‘Operational Guidelines on global standing instruction – Individuals.’ The instructions are expected to begin on August 1, 2020.
The Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System (NIBSS) will manage the entire operations of the Global Standing Instruction on behalf of banks using customers Bank Verification Numbers (BVN).
Nigeria’s First Female Combat Helicopter Pilot, Dies
The first-ever female combat helicopter pilot in Nigeria, Flying Officer Tolulope Arotile, is dead at barely 23 years of age.
Eight months ago, she was just decorated by the Chief of Air Staff, Sadique Abubakar, as the first female helicopter pilot in history. She died on Tuesday as a result of head injuries sustained from a road traffic accident at the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) Base in Kaduna.
20 clubs in the Nigerian Women Football League to receive funds from FIFA
According to a statement from the Federation of International Football Associations (FIFA), funds will be shared among a total of 20 eligible Nigerian teams that represented their countries at the 2019 Women’s World Cup in France.
A sum of $194,030 will be distributed amongst the Rivers Angels, FC Robo, Bayelsa Queens, Nasarawa Amazons, who released players for the tournament, and 17 other clubs. They will be paid for their role in training and developing players who featured for the Super Falcons at last year’s tournament in France.
“The money is paid out with the intention of enabling beneficiary clubs to create a high-performance environment for the best players in the world and to invest in developing women’s football at the grassroots level,” FIFA said in a statement.
Nigerian Senate Passes Bill Prescribing Life Imprisonment For Kidnappers
On Tuesday, the Nigerian Senate passed a bill authorising the raise in punishment for anyone found guilty of kidnapping from 10 years to life imprisonment. The bill tagged ‘The Criminal Code Act (Amendment) Bill, 2020’ is sponsored by Lagos Central Senator, Oluremi Tinubu.
The bill has now approved the deletion of the limitation period for the prosecution of defilement which means anyone who commits rape can be prosecuted any time the matter is filed.
Furthermore, the law removes gender restrictions on the offence of rape; asserting that both male and female individuals could be raped.
