Popular Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmed Gumi, has described the clash between the Nigerian Army and members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria, as a divine intervention.
Over 300 Shiite Muslims were reported to have been killed by Nigerian troops between December 12 and 13, when the army destroyed the headquarters of the sect and arrested the leader of the movement, Ibrahim El-Zakzaky.
Reacting to the clash on Tuesday, Sheikh Gumi accused El-Zakzaky of running a parallel government in the North.
Gumi, who’s a renowned opponent of El-Zakzaky, alleged that the Shiite sect had been conducting military training for its members for over 40 years.
He said: “The Shiites have been embarking on military training and producing cadets and soldiers.
“The Islamic Movement of Nigeria does not recognise the corporate entity of Nigeria. The group is not registered. They operate above the law and they get direct foreign aid.”
Furthermore, the Kaduna based cleric disclosed that the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua had informed that Iran was supplying arms to the El-Zakzaky-led movement.
Gumi said he had in 2014, written a letter warning of the danger in blocking highways by the Shi’ite sect “where his (El-Zakzaky) followers travelled on foot from all over the country to Zaria.”
He added that the blockage of roads as allegedly done by the Shi’ites “is an abomination in Islam.”
‘The strife and unnecessary blocking of roads and shouting slogans on the way increases the tension in the North’, while adding that the clash between the Army and the sect was a divine intervention to prevent the recurrence of ‘another Boko Haram.’
