The Lagos Model United Nations (LMUN) is a three-day conference organised by the Faculty of Law, University of Lagos, which simulates the committees, and the resolution making process in the United Nations. Registered delegates are assigned different countries, and for the purpose of the conference, are to speak, debate, strategise, proffer solutions, and form alliances as representatives of the country. It is perhaps the largest Model United Nations Conference organised by a University in Nigeria, and the West Africa Sub-region.

With first-hand experience as to the power of speech and thought to change the world, create new ideologies, and provide solutions to world issues, and with the success of various Model United Nations Conferences around the world, LMUN arose from the need not only to engage youth, particularly those in Nigeria, to take an active stance in tackling world issues but also to close the gap between youth and governance in general.

In Nigeria and Africa as a whole, the dearth of knowledge on international issues, and the lack of representation of the youth in the polity has created a disconnect in preparing the youth to lead and disabling them from actively competing with their counterparts worldwide. LMUN not only provides such an opportunity for learning, it also provides one for self-development, teaching and honing skills such as; public speaking, resolution writing, international economics and international trade, the complexities of negotiation, and most importantly, teamwork and cooperation of people from diverse backgrounds.

At LMUN, we believe that the youth are the Leaders of Today, as opposed to future leaders, and the conference is aimed not only at teaching diplomacy, and conflict resolution, but at engaging youth from all over the world, and allowing them think differently, recognise and appreciate different thoughts, all with the purpose of solving pressing issues, not in Africa alone but the world as a whole.

With the success of the Conference in 2016, the 2017 conference has expanded features, aimed at effecting even change in the lives of the youth, Nigeria, and the world at large. The conference will feature apart from the United Nations Committees of the; General Assembly, Security Council, Human Rights Committee, the United Nations Development Program(UNDP), the United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF); two committees of African Union; the Executive Council of the AU, and the Economic Cultural and Social Committee.

In addition to the display of oratory and diplomatic skills by delegates, the 2017 conference also features the idea fair, which encourages participants to create a practical innovative project, based on this year’s theme, to effect change in a particular sphere of the community. The top 10 candidates will be shortlisted, and the winner will get sponsorship, and other required aid to enable the fruition of the project. The idea fair seeks to engage the entrepreneurial, problem-solving side of participants, and to contribute to social change, development and sustainability in local communities.

The career fair is another brilliant addition to this year’s conference. The Secretariat will be inviting representatives from renowned institutions of higher learning, local and international, exposing delegates to information on courses available, scholarship opportunities and available extracurriculars. Thus not only thinking of the present, LMUN aims to impact the future of our delegates, in extension the youth, and the world at large.
