#YNaijaMusicVideoReview: D’prince’s ‘Oyo’ is probably the best thing he has done in a while

oyo

Was that really D’prince in that video? Wow!

D’prince lost me a long time ago with his combination of musical disposition. He didn’t seem to be getting  it, I don’t know why.

He started off great don’t get me wrong but lost it along the way. A lot of speculation dwelt on the then Mo’hits and the supposed non-existent nepotism edging instead towards D’banj.

Since Mavin, D’prince has been getting a little better at his work or maybe Don Jazzy has decided to focus more on pruning the rest of his flock according to their individual talents. Whichever it is it’s working miracles.

I stumbled upon the video, ‘Oyo’ and having given up on the artiste, I would have hurriedly changed the channel but surprisingly I couldn’t take my eyes off it. D’prince has really taken his art a notch higher.

Video

The video directed by Clarence Peters and produced by Don Jazzy has a sweet blend of fuji and highlife. My best part is when the trumpet sounds, it reminds you of the average Fela music. The scenery then makes the entire outlook perfect- Street scenes with a lot of activities. I particularly like the TV sets placed carelessly on pavements and the indifferent attitude shown by passersby.

Message

The video basically describes the lackadaisical beings in the country. Those who simply, though able bodied, would rather you feed them than work for their daily meal. It reminds them that they are indeed on their own and no one is there to help you as the music clearly stated, ”when you die some go cry, no body go follow you die.”

Flops

You’d easily get caught up in the music’s sultry rhythm but if you carefully pay attention to the lyrics you’d notice where he said, “your landlord, your government, your friend, your uncle…your government”- short of words D’prince?

Credits

Love the modern day Fela vibe the music portrayed and that was supposed to be achieved – A for effort. Fantastic picture quality and great acting. But then it is Clarence Peters so…
