#YNaija2017Review: Ajimobi, Dino Melaye, Apostle Suleman… Look who else starred in the 10 worst videos of the year

Watch and cringe.

  1. Apostle Suleman and wife make a love song

General Overseer of the Omega Fire Ministries Worldwide, Apostle Johnson Suleman was embroiled in a scandal that uncovered allegations of extra marital dalliances with different women. Suleman’s wife, Lizzy made the decision to stand by her man. But she didn’t just do it quietly. She made us sit through a ridiculously cheesy love song and video titled ‘My Hero,’ that had both she and her hubby making like a B-list Nollywood film.

  1. Yemi Osinbajo’s not so hot Davos outing

For all the confidence that Yemi Osinbajo inspires as a leader, there is still cause for concern. He had an embarrassing outing at Davos when he was queried on his government’s marshal plan for lifting the country under recession. He rambled on sub-confidently about the restiveness in the Niger Delta, going back to his government’s rest mode of whining about the insufficiencies of the last administration, impressing no one anywhere.

  1. Lai Mohammed Jollof gaffe

As the country’s official spokesperson, Lai Mohammed had only one job when meeting CNN reporter Richard Quest during the latter’s business special on Nigeria. Reigniting the famous debate over Nigerian and Ghanaian Jollof, Quest asked Mohammed a simple enough question. Which country makes the best Jollof? Mr Mohammed was expected to end the debate there and then by naming his own country (of course). Instead he mumbled some gibberish before naming Senegal. Even Mr Quest was embarrassed.

  1. Sex and the Senator

The Senator representing Yobe East senatorial district, Bukar Abba Ibrahim was in the news, not for any sound lawmaking, but on account of his sexcapades, via a grainy video detailing his encounter with two young ladies who were filming their encounter. Ibrahim who was a nonperforming Governor of Yobe back when a controversial Sharia bill was signed into law, and is husband to a serving minister, owned up to the video but maintained he had done nothing wrong. And he got away with it. The patriarchy stays winning.

  1. Dino Melaye mocks his enemies in song

At this point, nothing Dino Melaye does can shock us anymore. Honestly. So it is with regret, that we bring you yet another ignoble entry in the Dino Melaye Hall of Fame. Did Senator Melaye graduate from the Ahmadu Bello University? Did he not? Shortly after appearing before the Senate committee on ethics and privileges over his certificate controversy, Melaye made this video to mock his enemies. Watch and cringe.

  1. 2baba cancelling protest

The man who started a movement was the same person who almost brought it to a premature end. When the artiste formerly known as 2face Idibia – he chose to be officially recognised as 2baba in 2014 – put out a video declaring the abrupt cancellation of the feverishly anticipated One Voice protest march which he had only days ago canvassed support for on the internet, it was not a few persons that were left disappointed, the wind knocked out of their sails.

  1. All your favorite comedians are problematic

The #BBNaija incident of sexual abuse perpetrated by a housemate, Kemen – eventually disqualified – on a female contestant, TBoss, uncovered an ugly layer of misogyny and unintelligence among some of the more famous comedians. At his flagship Easter show, AY made light of the situation with an attempt to mansplain Kemen’s behaviour. Earlier, small-time comedian, Baba de Baba had done a cringe-worthy skit justifying rape while Bovi capped it off with a disturbing and tasteless joke situating his kids in a homophobic narration.

  1. Ajimobi and constituted authority

While addressing protesting students of the Oyo state co-owned Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Governor Abiola Ajimobi was caught on video, giving the worst performance of his public service career. In turns shocking, infuriating and chill-inducing, Ajimobi’s response to an educational emergency situation was a crass demonstration of power and privilege. An uncomfortable, worrisome display from an elected official existing in a reality far different from those who put him in office.

  1. #EndSARS brutality

After suffering years of dehumanising and degrading treatment from the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), an elite unit of the Nigerian Police Force set up to combat the country’s crime rate, Nigerians decided they had had enough. Buoyed by the #MeToo movement sweeping the world, the #EndSARS materialised, with people speaking out on their gruesome experiences – and posting videos to back them up – while calling on the government to do away with the unit all together. The Inspector General of Police has announced reforms but Nigerians are pushing for a total disbandment.

  1. Otodo Gbame

The Governor of Lagos, Akinwunmi Ambode has since inauguration, run a government notorious for its lack of inclusivity. Less disadvantaged people and the urban poor have borne the brunt of government’s inhumane policies as seen with the disturbing videos coming out of Otodo Gbame. Members of the riverine settlement in Lekki were sacked, forced to flee for their lives on boats and canoes, amidst a hail of bullets and tear gas. This despite an injunction from a Lagos High court restraining the state government from carrying out further demolition exercises.
