The YNaija Ranking: Obiwon takes the lead in our Top 10 Gospel Artiste Countdown

Obiwon Obiora takes the top spot this month because of his new video for Mercy, straight off his latest album, Overflow. As we have mentioned ‘Oh Jesus’ is easily the brightest song from the excellent album. ‘Mercy’ is the second best. And in a relatively sparse first two months of the year for gospel artistes – actually, for Nigerian music generally – it easily stands out.

Then there is Glowreeyah Braimah’s ‘Jesus is Here’, released in Maech; a calm, solemn statement of faith and confidence, enhanced by its adoption of Nigerian-language worship songs including the popular Yoruba ‘Kabiyesi’. The word to describe Glowreeyah’s voice is “soothing”. What a marvelous gift.

Nathaniel Bassey’s ‘Onise Iyanu’ takes third place, just because it continues to be a hit it and out of church, and all across the media, and its social media talkability.

Tim Godfrey’s ‘Bless the Lord’, also released in March, quickly climbs up the Top 10 to number three. The signs are already clear that it can be a church hit in a matter of time.

And the number five spot goes to Mike Abdul, who releases Grateful, off a new EP, to mark his birthday. It is a rich, soulful song right from the first sound of it, and the percussions welcome you with warmth. Abdul doesn’t get enough credit for brilliance.
