On Friday, July 1 2016, Obi Ajunouma a.k.a DJ Obi broke the 200-hour Guinness World record for the longest DJ set in history.

His record breaking feat has drawn widespread attention and admiration from home and abroad.

Everyday, DJ Obi was visited by movers and shakers in the Nigerian entertainment industry and an ever increasing number of supporters and admirers.

YNaija was on the scene at Sao Cafe, Lekki, Lagos on Friday to witness the historic feat and we had a chat with the record breaker himself – DJ Obi who will set his own record of 240 hours by 11.30pm on Saturday.

Here is what he had to say.

In 3 words, how does this feel?

Amazing, crazy and unexpected

 

Did you at any point almost throw in the towel?

Day 2 was horrible. I didn’t post anything on social media because I was hallucinating. It was that day that I knew the popular saying ‘Body no be firewood’ was true. It was a very crazy day.

How many people tried to talk you out of doing this?

Nobody. Maybe some little discouragements here and there but nothing concrete.

 

In the 8 months of planning for this, did you at any point almost cancel the plan?

Yes. I applied for Africa but I got declined for two months and I re-applied for world and it took forever for the reply, I got discouraged. Thankfully they answered this year and the rest is history.

 

When planning for this, what was the thing you most feared might happen?

I would say stable electricity because you know the music must not stop playing but thankfully so far we have been able to find our way around it.

What has been the most interesting part of this experience?

My music library has gained more depth. Different songs from different cultures. I am trying out new songs every day.

What has been the worst thing about this experience?

Hallucination is not a small thing to joke with. I told you about day 2. My family members thought I was going insane. They called pastors and they started to pray.

By day 3, when I was better I hardly remembered anything that happened the previous day because I wasn’t myself due to no sleep.

If you were asked to do this all over again, would you do it?

Yes I would. However, I would like to give myself space and prepare more mentally.

Did you expect this massive support from the industry?

I didn’t, to be honest. I was shocked.

Some people would ask ‘why exactly is he putting himself through all of this with no financial reward in sight’. What do you have to say about this?

It is a PR stunt and yes there is no financial reward but it is already opening doors for amazing opportunities. For instance as at Wednesday, my Instagram followers had gone up to 13,000 and by today it’s over 20,000. Isn’t that a reward on its own? From countless phone calls to social media notifications, my phone keeps beeping all day.

How did the concept for this audacious attempt come about?

Someone mentioned the record at the Wildflower PR conference last year and I didn’t even know anything like that existed for Deejays.

 

If he was alive today, what do you think your dad would say to you at this point in time?

I think he would say ‘Congratulations Obi’. Meanwhile I’m thinking would he have allowed me to do this? I know he’d be proud of me wherever he is though.

What is the first thing you would do once this is over?

Sleep. I mean total sleep.

 

So what next for DJ Obi?

Different projects. One thing I like to do is work in silence.

For instance, not a lot of people knew I was doing this. That’s why I said I am pretty shocked at the response from everybody.
