Yaw releases trailer for his first feature film ‘SMASH’

Steve Onu a.k.a. Yaw belongs to a crop of versatile Nigerian entertainers that have found fame through a combination of exploits. For Yaw, it is comedy and acting in television series and then being a radio presenter. Even though he has a made a few appearances in movies like Ghetto Bred (2018) and Gone to America (2017), making his own movie wasn’t something I expected from his this soon.

SMASH is Yaw’s first tryout as a producer and it’s unsurprisingly star-studded: Gideon Okeke, Iyabo Ojo, Ufuoma McDermott, Uzor Arukwe, Enyinna Nwigwe, Stanley Chibuna Funnybone, Bolanle Ninalowo, Kiki Omeili, Ebele Okaro and Comedian Senator. The movie is, unsurprisingly also, a comedy. Directed by John Njamah, SMASH follows the hilarious adventures of five best friends: Somachi, Madu, Anayo, Somto and Hector as they evade marriage despite their individual success and the unyielding pressure that comes with being unmarried at their ages.

If you haven’t noticed, SMASH is an acronym representing the first letter in the names of the friends, and the trailer opens with a snapshot of these men navigating their lives. Directed by John Njamah, who helmed the sitcom My Flatmates which stars Basket Mouth and Yaw himself, SMASH is the male-centric equivalent of the kind of films wherein women are pressured into marriage. And we have a ton of such movies. Slated for a November 30 premiere, SMASH will hit select theatres on December 7. Check out the trailer below.
