Xenophobia: Killing of Nigerian in South Africa reprehensible – FG

The Federal Government has condemned the death of a Nigerian in South Africa, Rasaq Ajao as “reprehensible”.

The auto mechanic was killed by a mob on Thursday on suspicion of his alleged engagement in drug peddling in Polokwane, Limpopo Province.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a statement by its Permanent Secretary, Ambassador Sola Enikanolaiye, urged the South African authorities to assume their responsibilities in taking proactive measures to prevent these incidents.

Enikanolaiye assured that the government will continue to pursue the course of justice for the dead and the injured, as well as ensure adequate compensation for the victims.

Five other Nigerians were wounded in the mayhem, which occurred when Nigerians resident in Polokwane, were holding a meeting.

Two of the injured had been discharged while three others were still receiving medical treatment.
