Rema continues a streak of casual virality that characterises most of the singer’s career to date. Just 2 weeks ago, the ‘Dumebi’ crooner, trended on Twitter for hours following a video that went viral, of singers Zlatan, Burna Boy, and Naira Marley, trying and appearing to fail to sing along to the lyrics to his single ‘Beamer.’

Some fans felt the singers might be mocking him while others felt they were just having a good time with a good song. He is trending again today, this time over a viral video from Drake. Thankfully Drake did not leave any room for ambiguity, quite the opposite.

The multiple award-winning American singer played ‘Dumebi’ to his fans on Instagram Live, while he casually sang along to the song, enunciating his words to match Rema’s, and just as casually told fans to expect a “sick song together” or as some still insist, even though the available video very clearly says otherwise, “Six songs together.”

Drake said “We got Rema too we got a sick song together”

The 20-year-old singer is one of a handful of Nigerian singers who have worked on a project with Drake, and this appears to be a careful positioning on the international stage by his management. Already the young act has songs with other international stars, his recent song with British-Ghanaian DJ Manny Norte ‘4am’  features 6LACK and UK rapper Tion Wayne, while Major Lazer has remixed his well-loved single, Dumebi.

In summer 2019, Rema went viral for similar reasons, another casual mention by former president of the United States, Barack Obama, who shared his summer playlist and it featured Rema’s song ‘Iron Man.’

Whether it is just the pull of his music, which to borrow from Drake’s lingo, “is SICK”, or his management’s effortless excellence in managing his career, the young star is setting the standard for how to win the game. Pitchfork tapped him as Leading The Next Generation of Nigerian Pop, and there is no reason to doubt the assertion looking at his footprints.

Fans who had not buried the hatchet of the slight they perceived from Zlatan’s videos, have dug up tweets from two weeks ago to respond to those who cautioned them from comparing Burna Boy to Rema.

It is unlikely that either artist will care for the comparison, Rema had specifically said in past interviews that he makes music “for young people of my generation,” and his unique sound speaks that truth well.

The same sound is why everyone seems hyped for the new music with Drake. Whether the song drops soon or later, one thing is sure. Rema will trend again soon, and it may not be by his own doing, but something good will come of it anyway. And we have decided to stan harder, for a King who can break the internet with such nonchalant ease.
