Funsho Williams: 14 years after, conversation on unearthing murderers of Lagos politician resurfaces

Funsho Williams

Anthony Olufunsho Williams was an influential Lagos politician and former Commissioner under Colonel Olagunsoye Oyinlola‘s Military Administration in Lagos.

Murdered in his Lagos home on the 27th of July, 2006, it’s fourteen years today since his demise and Nigerians are calling on the government to investigate his death as many have shared the controversies that led to his killing.

It is interesting to note that the influential politician was found bound, strangled, and stabbed at his home in Dolphin Estate, Ikoyi, which is a considerably exclusive and wealthy neighborhood. His death inspired rage amongst his supporters as it coincided with the period he was expectedly to emerge as the flag bearer for the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2007 Governorship election.

On Twitter, this Monday, many Nigerians are commenting on the demise of Funsho Williams and his political career that was cut short. Following a report of posters that read “Who Killed Funsho Williams?” that flooded the streets of Lagos, this trend has created room for many to also debate on Funsho’s death and how messy politics in Nigeria has been, even as many reiterate calls for his death to be investigated.

While the trend flooded with questions unanswered, it is interesting to note that a day after his death, two people were arrested in connection with his death. One was his campaign manager, and the other was Senator and former Works Minister Kingsley Adeseye Ogunlewe who was also vying for the PDP Gubernatorial ticket in 2007.

While a lot was said and a whole lot unsaid, Nigerians in this trend are remembering Funsho Williams and appealing to the security agencies and relevant authorities to follow through with the promise of ensuring justice is done.

Williams, survived by his wife, Hilda, and four children was laid to rest at the Victoria Court Cemetery, Lagos.
