Where is Katung Aduwak ?

Maybe not everyone remembers how Ebuka Obi-Uchendu came into public consciousness. Beyond being on-screen personas, both celebrities had contested the reality game show, Big Brother Nigeria. Another thing to remember is the show’s winner, Katung Aduwak.

katungKatung alongside fourteen other housemates competed for the grand prize of $100,000 for 91 days. In 2006, this was a huge deal. Actually, it still is a big deal. And that probably explains the excitement that the announcement of a second Big Brother Nigeria met with.

It also explains why we were spurred to consider the question of where the debut winner of the show is today.

Shortly after winning the Big Brother Nigeria award, Katung chose to back his interests in all things film-related up with a degree and went on to study film-making at the Digital Film Academy in New York. And since then, he’s immersed himself in all things media related – especially video content.

For Katung, film brings all of his talents together: “His love for writing has been directed at script writing; his love for drawing and paintings has been channelled into story boarding and composition; and his love for performances, acting and singing has evolved into wanting to create the best of talent delivery, hence his choice to be a director.”

It was no surprise when he started work on his first feature film in the summer of 2013 – Heaven’s Hell through which he will try to shine a spotlight on issues of domestic violence against women and children. The film boasts big names like Bimbo Akintola, OC Ukeje, Nse Ikpe Etim, Damilola Adegbite, Gideon Okeke, Linda Ejiofor, and South Africa-based actor, Fabian Lojede of the series- Jacob’s Cross.

Before then, he’d directed the video for Ice Prince Zamani’s ‘Superstar’ under Audu Maikori’s Choc Boys label.

Since then he’s kept a relatively low profile that is no less interesting and successful. He’s currently the senior channel manager at MTV Base Nigeria and senior creative manager at the Viacom Company (MTV, MTV Base, Nickelodeon, Comedy Central, and BET).

In his most recent televised interview, Katung explains that the reason why Heaven’s Hell is not out yet is that his benefactors have been embroiled in a 29 billion naira scandal that won’t permit the movie’s release. He however explained that the film has been travelling around the world to film festivals and has received critical acclaim and even awards.
