Purveyors of video portraying Obaseki as queer are either ‘ignorant or desperate’

With less than 72 hours for the Edo Governorship election, the political climate is getting heated. The state election is one that has garnered massive media attention and we have, over the past few weeks, seen quite a number of activities that have built our interest for September 19th – the D Day.

In a video making the rounds on WhatsApp, Governor Godwin Obaseki and flag bearer of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) is alleged to be homosexual. Hence, not fit to run as governor of the state.

Watch the video here:

According to the purveyors of the video, Obaseki is allegedly in a contract marriage with his wife, Betsy, and was accused of having an illicit affair with his personal assistant who hails from Delta State. The video went further to allege that Obaseki only gives out contracts to his ‘homosexual friends’ and has corrupted young people in Edo State with homosexual activities.

While the authenticity and source of the video is yet to be verified, it is safe to say that this video is just another reminder of the extent politicians and their cronies are willing to go, in pursuit of power.

Governor Obaseki of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and Osagie Ize-Iyamu of the All Progressive Congress (APC) stand as the two major contenders ahead of Saturday’s poll. However, opposition voices against his bid have continued to play on the controversy surrounding Obaseki’s defection to PDP as a point to sway voters to their end. This video, coming at this time, will also add to the list of many controversies that have been tied to Obaseki.

An attack on Obaseki’s using sexuality as a tool to sway potential voters to opposing parties is nothing short of desperation and ignorance. Nigerians need to be reminded that sexuality has nothing to do with a candidate’s capacity to lead – And most importantly, a person’s sexuality is their personal business.
