Trump signs Russia Sanctions bill into law

President Trump has signed the bill imposing new sanctions into law Wednesday, according to Reuters.

Last week, U.S. Congress voted with an overwhelming margin of 98-2 to punish the Russian government for interfering in the 2016 presidential elections, the annexation of Ukraine’s Crimea and other violations of international norms.

Trump, who has repeatedly expressed his intention to establish a warmer relationship between both nuclear powers was boxed into a corner by the vote and had to accept the new congressional sanctions. In the case that he didn’t sign the bill, it had enough support in Congress to override a presidential veto.

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said Tuesday that he and Trump thought the new sanctions would not”be helpful to our efforts” on breaking the ice with Russia. Vice President Mike Pence said that the bill showed Trump and Congress were speaking “with a unified voice”.

Warmer relations between the U.S. and the Kremlin are almost impossible despite Trump’s attempts, with investigations and congressional panels are ongoing into Russia’s interference into 2016 presidential election. Russia has denied meddling in the elections or collusion with Trump’s campaign.
