Trump and Putin had undisclosed conversations at G20 dinner

President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, had a second undisclosed discussion during a dinner for G20 leaders at a summit earlier this month in Germany, according to CNN.

The White House acknowledged the meeting and said it was “brief” and had only Putin’s translator as a witness and National Security Council spokesman Michael Anton said no other staff was present for the discussion.

The White House statement also said the conversation was in full view of other world leaders and their spouses at a dinner hosted by German Chancellor Angela Merkel during the G20 summit and not a “second meeting”.  Putin was seated next to the first lady Melania and Trump was seated near Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and his wife, as dinner came to an end, Trump went over to his wife and then spoke with Putin.

The two leaders had earlier held a scheduled formal two-hour bilateral meeting in which Trump later said Putin denied allegations that he authorized Russia’s efforts to meddle in the 2016 U.S. presidential election.

Trump responded to the reports in tweets Tuesday night, he wrote; “Fake News story of secret dinner with Putin is “sick.” All G 20 leaders, and spouses, were invited by the Chancellor of Germany. Press knew!”

In its statement, The White House attempted to downplay the discussion. “It is not merely perfectly normal, it is part of a president’s duties, to interact with world leaders,” the statement said.
