Trump administration to start building border wall prototypes in summer

According to reports, the agency overseeing U.S. border security plans will start building prototypes for President Trump’s proposed wall with Mexico later in the summer.Customs and Border Protection’s acting deputy commissionerRonald

Customs and Border Protection’s acting deputy commissioner Ronald Vitiello, said four to eight companies will be commissioned contracts for prototypes in San Diego that could be models for the border. Vitiello says it’s quite impractical to build a wall that long where there are already natural barriers, like lakes or canyons.

The 2018 budget proposal includes $1.6 billion for 74 miles of wall in Texas’ Rio Grande Valley and San Diego. There are currently 654 miles of fencing. About two weeks ago, Trump told a crowd at a rally in Iowa that the proposed wall could be made of solar panels.

“And this way, Mexico will have to pay much less money,” Trump said. “And that’s good, right? Is that good? … A solar wall. It makes sense. Let’s see. We are working it out.”

Though the Congress has not approved funding for the border wall, building prototypes are the easy hurdle, the administration is yet to find up to nearly $70 billion in funding for the actual wall, and navigate complex legal issues, such as securing land from property owners.

The companies will have 30 days to complete the models.
