Tragic: Hit and run driver kills street sweeper in Kwara

A highway sweeper has been killed by a car while on duty in Ilorin, Kwara state.

The incident occurred on Thursday, December 12, when a Toyota Corolla car rammed into five street sweepers at Agric junction.

The street sweepers were reportedly resting after rounding up work, when they were hit by the car. Four of them reportedly sustained varying degrees of injuries, while the fifth person died.

According to eyewitnesses, the driver of the car was using his mobile phone while driving and lost concentration.

As the driver was about hitting a refuse truck, he quickly swerved to the right side of the road, where he hit five of the women who were resting by the roadside.

The driver of the car reportedly escaped from the scene of the accident.

The women were said to have been rushed to a private hospital, but were referred to the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, but one was confirmed dead on arrival.

The Kwara State Police Command Public Relations Officer, Mr. Ajayi Okasanmi confirmed the accident. He disclosed that a woman died while four others were injured as a result of the accident, while adding that no arrest had been made.
