A regional governor in southern Niger on Thursday ordered the evacuation of the West African nation’s inhabited islands on Lake Chad following a deadly attack there by Boko Haram militants last week.

At least 74 Nigerien soldiers and civilians were killed when hundreds of the militants aboard motorised canoes attacked the island of Karamga at dawn on April 25, Reuters reports.

Dozens of soldier are still missing following clashes that ultimately drove out the attackers, leaving 156 of them dead.

Residents were told to leave the islands by May 4, according to a statement released by the governor of the region of Diffa.

Comrade Hashim Gital, the Chairman, Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Bauchi Council, has appealed to the state government to pay outstanding salaries and entitlements before May 29.

Gital, who made the appeal in Bauchi at a ceremony to mark the 2015 Workers Day, commended workers for their patience and self-control, especially in agreeing to collect instalmental payment for February 2015 salary.

President Goodluck Jonathan has promised that he would do all within his powers to ensure that all parts of the country still under the control of terrorists and insurgents are totally liberated before May 29.

In a statement on Thursday by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Reuben Abati, Jonathan stated this while receiving a delegation of Heads of Customs from the West and Central African Region of the World Customs Organisation, led by the Secretary-General of the organisation, Kunio Mikuriya at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Mrs. Eunice Jonathan, the mother of President Goodluck Jonathn, has commended the Joint Task Force (JTF) donating a borehole to Akipelai community in Ogbia Local Government Area of Bayelsa.

The borehole, which is sited at the premises of the Community Secondary School, Akipelai, was commissioned by President Jonathan’s mother, a native of the community, the News Agency of Nigeria reports.

She thanked the JTF Commander, Maj.-Gen. Emmanuel Atewe, for his efforts towards eradicating illegalities in the Niger Delta region.

Dame Abimbola Fashola, wife of Lagos State Governor, has urged parents to be supportive to their children in their chosen career.

She gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on the sidelines of the 70th Anniversary of the Holy Child College on Thursday in Lagos.

Fashola said that parents should not force their children against their chosen carers to enable them to live the life they wished.

“Our children need to be encouraged when they make any choice of career as they grow, so, please let us, the parents, allow them to be the best they can and walk tall and succeed,’’ she said.
