From the forecast to the disastrous aftermath | A timeline of Hurricane Harvey

After Hurricane Wilma in 2005, a new rainstorm, Hurricane Harvey has made landfall in Texas in the United States of America.

The resulting floods inundated hundreds of thousands of homes, displaced more than 30,000 people, and prompted more than 17,000 rescues.

Here’s a timeline of how the flood began and activities so far;

August 24, 2017: The National Hurricane Centre warned that Hurricane Harvey is gaining strength over the Gulf of Mexico and is expected to make landfall over southern Texas.

August 25, 2017: President Donald Trump said he is closely monitoring developments on Hurricane Harvey.

The President through his Twitter account, said, “I have spoken w/ @GovAbbott of Texas and @LouisianaGov Edwards. Closely monitoring #HurricaneHarvey developments & here to assist as needed.”

August 26,2017: Trump live-tweeted updates about the storm from Camp David, where he traveled to a day earlier.

August 27, 2017: The flooding intensified, as two people were reported dead.

The second person to die was an elderly woman, who was tragically killed while driving through flooded streets on Houston’s west side.

Rescue attempts continued in Houston for those stranded inside flooded homes and submerged vehicles.

It was reported that hundreds of calls have been fielded for water rescues as of early Sunday, including Houston police officials who evacuated two apartment complexes and rescued more than 50 children.

August 28, 2017: A Houston furniture store offered to help the thousands of displaced Texas residents that have nowhere to stay following the catastrophic flooding.

August 29, 2017: Famous televangelist and pastor of Lakewood Church in Houston, Joel Osteen became the subject of social media criticism for not offering shelter to the victims of the disaster at his mega church.

The 54-year-old televangelist cancelled services at his 16,000 capacity mega church on Sunday and has yet to reopen its doors despite thousands of flooded-out residents being desperately in need of shelter.

The White House announced that President Donald Trump would be visiting Texas to see the effects of Hurricane Harvey.

After receiving backlash for closing his church to victims of the Houston flood, preacher Joel Osteen announced that the Lakewood church has now been opened.

Osteen wrote, “Victoria and I care deeply about our fellow Houstonians. Lakewood’s doors are open and we are receiving anyone who needs shelter.

“God gives us grace for every challenge. Stay strong and know that God has you in the palm of His hand!”

President Donald Trump’s 2020-re-election campaign committee appealed to supporters to donate to disaster relief efforts for Hurricane Harvey.

August 30, 2017: Trump displayed with utmost loyalty and love the flag of the great state of Texas upon his arrival at the border town.

The rainstorm arrived west of Cameron, Louisiana, drenching the region with rain that could lead to “catastrophic and life-threatening flooding.”

A US refinery Port Arthur, adjudged to be the Nation’s largest oil refinery shuts down as Hurricane Harvey dents more devastation.

President Trump could no longer hold his feelings towards the devastation caused by Hurricane Harvey.

The President lamented over the havoc, following his visit to the fourth largest state in the US.

American actress and philanthropist, Sandra Bullock pledged $1 million to the Red Cross to help the Harvey relief effort underway in Texas.

August 31, 2017: Former Democrats Presidential aspirant, Bernie Sanders dropped a subliminal message at President Donald Trump while reacting to the Hurricane disaster plaguing Houston, Texas.

He warned the general populace, including an indirect dig at the incumbent administration for bowing out of the Paris climate change.

Leornado DiCaprio’s foundation donated $1 million (£775,000) as part of rescue funds for victims of Hurricane Harvey in Houston.

French controversial magazine, Charlie Hebdo on its new cover curated a statement which appears to mock Texans, by depicting them as neo-Nazis caught in the deluge of tropical storm Harvey.

Flood victims stranded in their homes got served with pizzas delivered by kayak.

Pizza Hut manager, Shayda Willison and her crew prepared over 120 pizzas upon hearing about people trapped in their homes because of extreme flooding resulting from the devastating weekend hurricane.

Texas lawmaker, Michael Burgess said starting from next week, Congress would deliver financial relief to the flood-ravaged areas in three tranches.

Pope Francis said he was touched by the “tragic loss of lives” and damage caused by storm Harvey in Texas and Louisiana.

President Donald Trump pledged to personally donate $1 million to disaster relief efforts in Texas.

Due to the heavy rainfall from Hurricane Harvey, an explosion occurred at the Arkema chemical plant.

The plant shut down its production just before the storm made landfall. But, with a 40in (102cm) of rainfall in the area which flooded the plant site, the power disconnection and back-up generators were flooded.

September 1, 2017: President Donald J. Trump proclaimed September 3, 2017, as a National Day of Prayer for the victims of Hurricane Harvey and for the National Response and Recovery Efforts.

September 2, 2017: President Donald Trump returned to Texas to meet rescuers and survivors of Hurricane Harvey.
