The calls for restructuring have been intense since President Buhari came into power | See timeline

The campaign for the restructuring of the country has recently increased.

Groups in the South-Eastern part of the country have continued to call for the devolution of power, notable among them is the Ohanaeze Ndigbo.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has also been on the forefront of the call for restructuring.

Here’s a timeline of calls for restructuring of the country since President Muhammadu Buhari came to power.

April 4, 2016: General Overseer of the Latter Rain Assembly, Pastor Tunde Bakare said Nigeria needs urgent revolution and restructuring.

He advised President Muhammadu Buhari to set up a Presidential Commission for National Reconciliation, Reintegration and Restructuring in order create a new national identity for Nigerians.

June 5, 2016: National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun said the party is not focused on restructuring the country at the moment.

June 13, 2016: Former Vice-President, Alex Ekwueme supported the call for restructuring Nigeria.

He said Nigeria was mature enough to go back to the principles and arrangement that was ignored by the founding fathers.

July 20, 2016: Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, said Nigeria’s restructuring is the surest solutions to its current economic challenges.

July 30, 2016: Tunde Bakare, General Overseer of the Latter Rain Assembly slammed northern elders who are opposed to the call for the restructuring of Nigeria.

The clergy man declared that the call for the restructuring of Nigeria is a call for true federalism.

August 21, 2016: Ekiti State governor, Ayodele Fayose said it was shocking that the All Progressives Congress (APC) who rode to power on the platform of true federalism is yet to heed to calls for restructuring.

October 3, 2016: Former Vice President and All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar once again reiterated his call for the restructuring of the country.

He said power and resources should be devolved to the states; stating that the FG had no responsibility running schools, digging boreholes, constructing and maintaining roads, providing water, electricity or feeding school children.

December 13, 2016: Atiku Abubakar said the call for restructuring is not the same as calling for the nation’s break up.

He added that the present “unitary federalism” in operation has failed, as he stated that regional governments did not owe salaries or close down schools.

December 23, 2016:  Ike Ekweremadu says for Nigeria’s economy to work, the unified system of government has to go.

January 8, 2017: Senior Pastor at the Latter Rain Assembly, Tunde Bakare said the one factor that will determine the success or failure of the plans made by the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari is restructuring of the nation.

Tunde Bakare called for the scrapping of the 36 states in the country and replace them with a regional system.

March 6, 2017: Atiku said the best time for Nigeria to restructure is now when there are calls from various quarters.

April 30, 2017: The leadership of Ohanaeze Ndigbo said it would meet with leaders of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu to accept restructuring instead of secession.

May 31, 2017: Minister of Justice and Attorney-General of the Federation Abubakar Malami (SAN) said those behind the quest for restructuring to avoid demonstrations because “it is a complex process”.

June 30, 2017: The Ohanaeze Youth Council (OYC), said it would reject any restructuring of Nigeria carried out by the  administration of President Muhammadu Buhari, saying it would not reflect equity and fairness.

Ohanaeze youth said they would rather prefer a restructuring exercise to be overseen by an Igbo leader or a leader from the South but not from the North.

July 6, 2017: Kogi State governor, Yahaya Bello said those calling for restructuring are the real enemies of Nigeria.

July 7, 2017: Acting President Yemi Osinbajo said the Federal Government is working on policies that will address issues around restructuring in the country.

He said the Federal Government was taking notes on the restructuring debates.

July 8, 2017: President-General of Ndigbo apex organisation, Ohanaeze, Chief John Nwodo said the Igbo preferred restructuring of the country to total break-up.

July 9, 2017: Spokesperson of the Buhari/Bakare Presidential Campaign in 2007, Yinka Odumakin recalled that President Muhammadu Buhari had earlier supported restructuring Nigeria.
