The Thread: It’s like Gambia won the World Cup

Africa and dictatorship go hand in hand. Mugabe is still ruling Zimbabwe with an iron hand at the ripe old age of 92. There’s something about our people and the thirst to remain in power at all costs. Such was Gambia’s case. Gambia is a small country in West Africa , with a population of a little over 1.8 million. Their President, Yahya Jammeh, has been in power for 22 years. According to the BBC, “Yahya Jammeh seized power in a bloodless coup in 1994 and has ruled with an iron fist ever since.” But today, the people took back that power.

Askani Senegambia, an online Gambia newspaper reports that, “On Thursday, after voting with his wife in the capital, Banjul, President Jammeh predicted a decisive win. This will be the biggest landslide in the history of the country,” he said, but Adama Barrow, his incumbent, correctly predicted Gambians were ready for change after more than 20 years of the Jammeh regime. Jammeh came to power in a coup in 1994 and then swept elections in 1996, 2001, 2006 and 2011 after a 2002 constitutional amendment removed presidential term limits.”

The celebrations on social media today are intense. It’s a reminder of when South Africans broke the back bone of apartheid in their country. Finally, the previously shackled citizens of The Gambia have tasted freedom. We rejoice with them.
