This Week In Music: Maleek Berry’s ”Flashy,” Burna Boy’s ”Anybody,” Black Magic’s ”Anything For Love,” and more

Because he has nothing better to do with his time, each Saturday, Bernard Dayo brings you the most awe-inspiring, confounding, addictive, or otherwise hilarious moments from the week in music. This week:

The summer vibes of Burna Boy’s ”Anybody”

Burna Boy released a summer-ready single Anybody yesterday, along with a flashy, energetic video. He says this in the intro of the first verse, literally: ”I don charge my energy, I no get time for no enemy.” Burna Boy oozing infectious milennial nonchalance while the sax fluting in skeletal bits is pure gold. Perfect for the summer.

Black Magic’s ”Anything For Love” is a whole mood

Black Magic released Anything For Love months ago and frankly, I didn’t expect a music video. But we have one now. Shot in Minna, the video is warm, tender and almost introspective, a loving portrait of Northern Nigeria while also interweaving a romance story.

Yemi Alade’s ”Bounce” is all you need

The message in Yemi Alade’s Bounce is ambiguous. Could it be about having sex or abstinence? Maybe I’m overthinking it. The production of the video is bouncy and buoyant, and articulates Alade’s trademark energy. You could learn a few dance moves.

Maleek Berry makes it all flashy in ”Flashy”

Flashy is Maleek Berry first single of 2o19 and you are hear in for a bit of surprise: he raps.

Dr SID’s ”Good time” is just…there

Good Time is the perfect avatar for the current Nigerian music landscape – monotonous, formulaic, and forgettable. There are a dozen other music videos from Dr SID that looks similar to Good Time. And I can assure, you will forget all about this video by morning.
