Tonight was the first in the battle stage of The Voice Nigeria singing competition and 12 out of the contestants that made it through the blind auditions went on stage in pairs of two to perform one song and attempt to outdo each other.
Six contestants made it through to the live show tonight per their performance while a seventh contestant, Jahnomso Ilem got himself an automatic entry after last week’s star singer, Kelvin Audu was said to have withdrawn.
Here’s how the contestants fared tonight:
#TeamYemiAlade‘s Ifeoma and Olla opened the show with Whitney Houston and Chaka Khan‘s classic, I’m Every Woman. It was a difficult song choice, by all means but Ifeoma seemed to be more in charge and she did outshine Olla and ended up earning herself a pass to the live show while Olla said goodbye to the show.
Happiness and IDYL are on #TeamTimi and their coach watched with keen attention as they made John Legend‘s Love Me Now into a duet. It was one tough decision to make as both not only sang in sync but perfected their mannerisms to fit the message of the song. Timi picked the male talent, IDYL over Happiness as he was opinion she did not quickly catch on in the performance.
Next stop was Daniel James and Efezino! #TeamWaje’s talents went head to head with a performance of Asa‘s Awe and yes, they both killed it in what was arguably one of the most captivating renditions of the night. But Waje had to pick only one and she went with Efezino. Just as we thought it was the end of the road for Daniel James, coach Patoranking uses his right to STEAL and cops Daniel into his own team for the live show.
From #TeamPatoranking, Favour and KessyDriz perform the first Nigerian track of the night, Yemi Alade‘s Na Gode. Good or bad? Well, that was their coach’s choice to make. He went with KessyDriz but it wasn’t the end of the road for Favour, she got the chance to say a heartfelt Na Gode after Waje STOLE and saved her.
#TeamYemiAlade‘s second pair of the night, Tori and Oge attempted to set the stage on fire with Katy Perry‘s Fireworks but Oge was able to set fire to Yemi Alade‘s heart as well as she got herself a pass to the live show as Tori said goodbye to the competition.
This was the battle that brought tears to coach Timi‘s eyes. Gee6ixx and Jahtell are on his team and they performed his song, The Woman I Love. In an emotional moment, Timi chose Jahtell over Gee6ixx as we said goodbye to one of the most promising contestants on the show.
