After about five people were confirmed dead last week following the outbreak of cholera, Borno health officials have confirmed that the death toll from the outbreak at the Internally Displaced Persons’ camp in Biu, Biu Local Government Area, has risen to 11.

This was disclosed on Friday, 8 August, by Edward Diga, the Principal Medical officer at Biu General Hospital, who told a team of officials from Borno Ministry of Health that no less than 325 Cholera cases were being handled by the hospital.

Mr. Diga said, “We still have about 30 people on admission, while the rest have been treated and discharged.”

He also attributed the increasing spread of the disease on the mass arrival of displaced persons from camps due to the incessant Boko Haram attacks on villages.

He added, “Mass movement of displaced persons from surrounding villages to Biu caused by insurgency attack has actually worsened the spread of the disease. I wish to commend the state government for its timely intervention and support toward curtailing the spread.”

Meanwhile, Salmo Kolo, Borno’s Commissioner for Health, said the team of health officials’ presence at the camp was to distribute drugs and other essential items provided by the government for the victims of Boko Haram.

Kolo was represented by Lawi Mishelia, the Director of Public Health, who advised health officials to be careful and innovative in dealing with suspected cholera cases to prevent and curb the spread.
