The NCDC needs to consider stronger campaigns if we’d win over the ‘Doubting Thomasses’

If there is one habit synonymous with adults, it is falling into routine. We often have that thing we can’t do unless some other thing precedes it. Some can’t go to bed without a glass of water, while some can’t begin their day without their morning exercise, whatever it is, most people at a stage in their life develop a routine they simply are too comfortable with. Such has become the case for concerned citizens.

Many Nigerians who are worried about the contagion of the Coronavirus have fallen into the routine of checking in with the NCDC reports every night before going to bed, to know the state of things they are waking up to the next day.

But the routine that has got people concerned is the routine the NCDC has gotten acquainted to, which is its repetitive information format. Taking a cue from national medical bodies from other countries, the centre goes out of its way to elaborate the dangers and the severity of the virus, even going as far documenting some of the cases through public service announcements which did well in getting people to cooperate with lock-down rules.

For a country where its government has a history of being ambiguous with the citizenry, skeptical Nigerians are finding it hard to believe the reported COVID-19 cases. Also, the fact that people don’t get to see visual confirmation of these cases was spotted as one of the major causes why Nigerians remain reluctant to comply with government guidelines.

It also doesn’t help that videos from places like Gombe isolation center shows patients who don’t seem to be sick, leaving people to question what is really going on.

With this, people are calling for the NCDC to be transparent with the people, people are not interested in being strung along another government scam, and to better help prove that the COVID-19 cases are true without ambiguities, people would love to see the NCDC depict the severity of our situation so that Nigerians can truly get on board with the precautionary measures they have put in place.
