[The Media Blog] Turn Up: Nigerian Twitter is having its first TwitterNG party and you are invited

TwitterNG

Since Twitter became a thing in Nigeria, there have always been online groups who have tried to take their clout and followership offline. Who could forget the epic parties of 2010- 2012 and the @TheNakedConvos events of 2012 – 2016. It feels like the biggest gamble, replicate the community and camaraderie online, offline.

Currently, the TwitterNG party looks like another exciting addition to December’s tight roster of end-of-the-year activities. With a Twitter account of its own, scheduled on the penultimate day of the year and to hold in Lagos (where else?), and a steadily increasing wave about its awareness, Nigerian Twitter users haven’t stopped tweeting about it. The TwitterNG party, first of its kind and a youth-cultural invention, is a testament to the peculiarity and bright-eyed worldview of Nigerian Twitter and also as a rich, complex microclimate. There’s a pinned tweet on its account that reads, “…the biggest social media party,” followed by its hashtag and a jolly pair of human emojis.

To add to its feature, customized clothing will be available in t-shirts and hoodies, with the Twitter handle of the wearer and this will equally serve as the invitation pass. Over time, Nigerian Twitter has spun a breed of influencers and personalities in its virtual space, and it’s in this dynamic that the TwitterNG party will revel in, blurring boundaries between ordinary Twitter-zens and elite profiles for the ultimate late-year party. Though there have been lighthearted grievances about the choosing of Lagos as the host state, Crystal Lounge, Ikeja is where you want to be on December 30. Will you turn up?
