The Late 5: Malami gives reasons why FG can’t release Dasuki, Kogi CP says policemen were attacked by Melaye’s convoy and other stories

The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami has given reasons why the federal government cannot release detained former National Security Adviser, Colonel Sambo Dasuki (rtd.)

Malami who spoke with the Voice of America’s Hausa Service said, “Remember, we are talking about a person who was instrumental to the deaths of over 100,000 people. Are you saying that the rights of one person are more important than that of 100,000 who lost their lives?”

“Reports have shown that there was a massive mismanagement of funds meant for military hardware, which the military could not access and that led to the death of many, embezzlement of the fund and because of that many people have lost their lives. Obeying the court is not the issue per say.”

The commissioner of Police in Kogi, Mr. Ali Janga has accused men in the convoy of the senator representing Kogi West, Dino Melaye of attacking policemen.

While speaking to newsmen in Lokoja on Friday, Janga denied allegations from Melaye that policemen shot at his convoy saying, “Unidentified civilians inside (a vehicle in the convoy) decided to open fire on my policemen. You don’t expect the police to fold their arms; eventually they replied and opened fire too. They were there on assignment. Nobody attacked Dino but rather, his convoy attacked my policemen and they repelled.”

Janga added, “We are going after him (Melaye) and if we cannot see him, we will declare him wanted and we will send his name for watchlisting.”

Former vice president Atiku Abubakar will launch his presidential campaign bid on Saturday following “several months of consultations with critical stakeholders in Nigeria and members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP),” his office said in a statement.

The statement said the launch will be done in Yola, the Adamawa state capital.

The statement added that “The campaign policy documents being baked by policy experts from diverse backgrounds and youth professionals across the country will be unveiled as soon as the process is concluded. The policy document covers a large area of Nigeria’s national life including the economy, restructuring, education, healthcare, agriculture, youth and women development among many others.”

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused President Muhammadu Buhari and the Federal Government of trying to use the unveiling of the national carrier as a ploy to deceive Nigerians ahead of the 2019 elections.

In a statement on Friday by its National Publicity Secretary Mr. Kola Ologbondiyan, the party said, “Is it not comical that while other nations are unveiling and rolling out real planes, the Buhari administration, in a most hilarious manner, is ‘unveiling’ drawings of an airplane, name, logo and imaginary routes of a nonexistent fleet, as our national carrier, in faraway London?

“What President Buhari and his handlers fail to understand is that Nigerians can see through their fraud and lies. Apart from drawings of airplanes, there are no structures to indicate that a new airline, billed to commence operation in December this year, is being set up; there are no offices, no recruitment of personnel and no form of ground activity anywhere in the country.”

President Muhammadu Buhari says he announced his re-election bid early enough to “save a lot of time and cool tempers”.

Speaking on Friday when he received the Buhari Support Group Centre (BSGC) at the presidential villa Buhari said, “I had to announce before the national executive committee (NEC) about my intention to ask for the party’s nomination for next year’s election so that we can save a lot of time and cool tempers.

“A lot of people are trying to make it a habit of being a nuisance to themselves and to many Nigerians. So when I announced my intention, I said okay let those who are serious come out and I try to make sure that the party is reorganise and consolidated so that we start from bottom to top.”
