The Late 5: Gunmen reportedly kidnap Dino Melaye, Police interrogates Saraki and other stories

These are the stories that drove the conversation today:

Senator representing Kogi West, Dino Melaye was on Thursday reportedly kidnapped by unknown gunmen on his way to Kogi from Abuja.

Senator Ben Murray Bruce disclosed this in a tweet on his official twitter handle.

A spokesperson for the Senator, Gideon Ayodele, reportedly confirmed that the Senator’s brother, Moses Melaye, reported the matter at Gwagwalada Divisional Headquarters shortly after the incident happened on Thursday morning.

Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki was on Thursday interrogated by operatives of the Intelligence Response Team of the Nigeria Police over his alleged involvement in the April 5 Offa bank robbery.

The interrogation followed Saraki’s failure to honour an earlier invitation by the police on Monday but wrote to ask the Inspector General of Police to detail his men to come to his office to interrogate him in his office as directed by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami has reportedly told the police that there was no evidence linking the Senate President Bukola Saraki and Kwara State Governor Abdulfattah Ahmed to the April 5 Offa robbery attack.

This was contained in a letter dated June 22 signed for Malami by Director of Public Prosecutions, Mohammed Umar recognising only six prime suspects: Ayoade Akinnibosun, Ibikunle Ogunleye, Adeola Ibrahim, Salawudeen Azeez, Niyi Ogundiran and Mr Adikwu should be charged to court with the offences of criminal conspiracy, armed robbery and culpable homicide punishable with death with Olalekan Alabi, a personal assistant to Kwara State Governor, be charged for illegal possession of arms.

The Chief of Staff to the Kwara State Governor, Yusuf Abdulwahab was on Wednesday also granted an interim bail and cleared, with the prosecutor saying “no evidence is credible enough to sustain any charge based on any offence known to law against him.”

National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Adams Oshiomhole, has said the doors of the ruling party are open to defectors to return, but would not be lured with gifts such as dollars or automatic tickets.

He made the disclosure on Thursday while speaking to journalists after meeting with the APC caucus in the House of Representatives at the party’s secretariat in Abuja, noting that the APC does not need politicians of convenience but members with a shared ideology.

Oshiomhole advised the lawmakers who defected from the party not to be deceived by promises of automatic tickets while describing such promise as ‘a mirage.’

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) of plotting to impeach the Governor of Ekiti, Ayodele Fayose.

The accusation was contained in a statement on Thursday by the party’s spokesman, Kola Ologbondiyan who noted that “any resort to underhand measures to impeach Fayose, without the constitutionally required 2/3 of the members of the House, particularly at this time, when the lawmakers are currently on their annual recess, will surely be resisted by its members.”

The PDP further warned the ruling party to desist from the alleged plots or attract dire consequences, adding that the APC is trying to cover up for suspected rigging of the just concluded gubernatorial election in the state.
