Buhari nominates Emefiele as CBN governor for second term
President Muhammadu Buhari has nominated the governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emiefele, for a second and final term of five years. Buhari’s letter seeking the Senate’s approval for his reappointment of Emefiele was read out by the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, at the close of plenary on Thursday.
Buhari approves appointment of new NYSC DG
The Nigerian army says President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the appointment of Shuaibu Ibrahim as director-general (DG) of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). The army’s claim was contained in the report of the senate committee which investigated the appointment.
Jigawa House of Assembly removes speaker
Isah Idris, the speaker of Jigawa state house of assembly, has been removed. The speaker was impeached by 20 out of the 30 members of the house who voted in what appeared to be an emergency seating on Thursday morning. Idris Garba, better known as Kareka, a former speaker, was unanimously voted in as the new speaker of the house shortly after the impeachment of Idris.
Osun: PDP vows to challenge verdict at Supreme Court
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has vowed to challenge Thursday’s verdict of the Court of Appeal that upheld the election of Gboyega Oyetola as governor of Osun.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), had declared Oyetola who contested on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as winner of the election. But the Election Petition Tribunal had nullified Oyetola’s election and declared the candidate of the PDP, Senator Ademola Adeleke, winner of the poll, consequent upon which Oyetola challenged the Tribunal’s ruling at the appellate court.
Supreme Court judges are only answerable to God – Acting CJN
Ibrahim Muhammad, acting chief justice of Nigeria (CJN), says no human being can influence the judgement of the supreme court. Speaking on Thursday when the management of the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON), led by Muiz Banire, its chairman, paid a courtesy visit to his office, Muhammad said the judges are only answerable to God and no one can intimidate them in taking certain decisions.
