The information is false – Nigerian Army reacts to the reported death of 100 soldiers; why we should be worried about PDP’s spending behaviour – Presidency | Other top stories of the week

These are the stories that drove conversation this week.

President Muhammadu Buhari‘s media aide, Garba Shehu, said the opposition has more money than the government, alleging that the leading opposition parties have resolved to undertake a campaign clearly aimed at aggravating differences between Nigerians on the basis of especially religion, region and tribe.

Shehu stressed that the amount of money spent by the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) during its convention in Port Harcourt should be a major concern to Nigerians, adding that such act contrasts sharply with the high level of discipline put in place through the Treasury Single Account (TSA) being implemented by the Buhari government.

“This opposition, it must be said, has liquidity of the type that government itself does not have. The US Dollar rain by a major opposition party at their convention in Port Harcourt is a dire warning in this direction,” he said.

As the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) lifted the ban on election campaigns, the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential candidate and incumbent president, Muhammadu Buhari said he will remodel 10,000 schools annually and create 15 million jobs if re-elected.

On his part, the PDP candidate, Atiku Abubakar said he will provide 3 million jobs if elected. In his policy document, Atiku says he will lift 50 million people out of poverty, sell NNPC and restructure Nigeria, read here.

President Buhari promised that his administration will continue to ensure appropriate funding for the nation’s armed forces in order to enhance capacity building and deepen professionalism.

The President also assured that his administration is committed to bringing an end to Boko Haram activities in the North-East and further make all parts of the country safe for Nigerians to live peacefully with one another.

But a few days after, a lieutenant colonel and military unit commander along with dozens of soldiers were killed by rampaging Boko Haram insurgents who overran 157 Task Force Battalion in Metele, Abadam Local Government Area, Borno.

The Army has since reacted to the reports in a statement, however, it did not state the number of casualties in the attack.

Former President, Goodluck Jonathan said that his loss in 2015 was due to several factors including Nigerian politicians – especially northern leaders –  who were “blinded by ambition” and the then U.S. President, Barack Obama, who sent his secretary of state, John Kerry to influence the election.

In his book titled, My Transition Hours, Jonathan said there was no time to implement the 2014 National Conference, despite having over seven months to do so – but he relied on Buhari to take it up. (pg 99 -108)

The former president also said the Obama administration refused to provide military assistance to ensure the return of the Chibok girls kidnapped in 2014.

For his defeat in 2015, Jonathan partly blamed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), saying “For some inexplicable reason, the INEC had been able to achieve near 100% distribution of Permanent Voters Cards in the North, including the North East, which was under siege with the Boko Haram insurgency but failed to record a similar level of distribution in the South which was relatively more peaceful.”

He also explained how the subsidy saga played out and how the protests were only politically motivated.

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha said – again – that the quickest and easiest means to the presidency for the people of the South East is to support President Buhari’s second term bid.

The SGF who disclosed shortly after the President met with the some South East leaders said “whatever they do in 2019 will determine what will happen thereafter, because politics is a game of numbers and it is like a cooperative society,” stressing that the Buhari administration has corrected the impression that the federal government was not doing anything for the people of the zone.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) closed down some properties allegedly owned by the immediate past Governor of Ekiti, Ayodele Fayose, in Ado-Ekiti, including three houses and a building housing Peoples Voice 104.1 FM.

The closure of the properties is believed to be in relation to a running battle between the former governor and the EFCC over the claim that he benefited from a sum of N2.99 billion from the arms fund allotted to the office of the former National Security Adviser, Col Bello Dasuki (rtd).

Reacting to the development, Fayose in a statement signed by his media aide, accused the EFCC of sealing houses belonging to innocent people in the state, under the guise that the houses are linked to him, stressing that the actions of the anti-graft agency were “another wild goose chase and the usual media campaign against his person.”

The Federal Government said it will henceforth not hesitate to sanction any Organisation, Institution or affiliation that denies Nigerians the right to observe their holidays as provided in the Act by an “appropriate authority”.

As contained in a statement by the Minister of Interior, Lt Gen. (rtd) Abdulrahman Bello Dambazau, the Federal government stated that the laws establishing public holidays are contained in the Public Holidays Act of 1979, which states that “The days mentioned in the Schedule to this Act shall be kept as public holidays throughout Nigeria.”
