It was indeed a joyous weekend for Nigerians as the Super Eagles defeated Zambia’s Chipolopolo, gracefully qualifying for the 2018 World Cup in Russia – the first African country to achieve such feat. Egypt followed as close second.

The sound of victory resonated all the way from Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, to the Aso Villa in Abuja where President Muhammadu Buhari described it as “very sweet”.  Even Senate President Bukola Saraki couldn’t keep his calm. You should see this video of him at the stadium to understand what we mean.

But it turns out all was not so rosy at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo. Although the Nigerian Football Federation said there were no deaths following a stampede while fans tried to gain entry into the stadium which was way over capacity, they, however, admitted that several were injured.

The Chairman Senate Committee on Petroleum Resource, Senator Tayo Alasoadura, has said President Buhari should suspend the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Dr Ibe Kachikwu, and the Group Managing Director, Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, Dr Maikanti Baru, both of whom have been involved in a case of alleged discrepancies.

Senator Alasoadura, who said this in an interview on Channels TV, explained why this was the best line of action.

Meanwhile, despite the absence of Nnamdi Kanu, the controversial leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) secessionist group, the ripple effect of his agitation continues.

Yesterday, soldiers allegedly invaded Nnamdi Kanu’s family residence carting away with some items. Read what Nnamdi Kanu’s younger brother Emmanuel Kanu, who made the allegation, said, here.

A kinsman of Nnamdi Kanu has also filed a suit for an order directing the British High Commission to arrest and extradite Nnamdi Kanu, from the United Kingdom. Find out why.

The Monkeypox virus which broke out in Bayelsa last week has seemingly begun to spread even further.

Although two out of the eleven patients previously quarantined after being infected had been discharged, hinting progress, the virus has, however, spread to Akwa Ibom. So far, one case has been confirmed in the state, while two are being investigated.

Not very good news on the international scene as another Nigerian has been shot dead in South Africa. This is barely one month after a Nigerian was tortured to death by Sout African policemen.

35-year-old phone technician Jelili Omoyeke was shot dead at a parking lot in Johannesburg on Saturday. This is the very sad reason why he was shot.
