The Nigerian Police have confirmed the re-arrest of Senator Dino Melaye (APC, Kogi West), after his arraignment and subsequent bail at a Wuse Zone 2 Chief Magistrate’s Court in Abuja, on Wednesday.

In a statement signed by the Force Public Relations officer, Jimoh Moshood, the police said Melaye was arraigned at the Magistrate Court for alleged criminal conspiracy, causing damage to government property, attempted suicide and escape from lawful custody.

“It will be recalled that, on the 24th April, 2018, at about 1200Hrs, Senator Dino Melaye while in lawful custody of the Nigeria Police Force and being taken for arraignment for Conspiracy and Unlawful Possession of Prohibited Firearms in Court in Lokoja, from Abuja, escaped from lawful custody when hoodlums and miscreants in Two (2) Toyota Hilux Vehicles blocked the Police vehicle conveying Senator Dino Melaye around Area 1 Round About, Abuja and in the process the Senator broke the side glass of the vehicle and jumped out of the Police bus through the window and was rescued from the Police men by hoodlums and miscreants to an unknown destination before he was rearrested at Zankli Hospital in Abuja later in the day on same date. This case was investigated and that is why the senator was arraigned in court today,” the police spokesperson said.

“Meanwhile, the police investigation team re-arrested Senator Dino Melaye today, 2nd May, 2018 after his arraignment at Chief Magistrate Court, Wuse for the pending offences of Criminal Conspiracy and Unlawful Possession of Prohibited Firearms already filed in a court of competent jurisdiction in Lokoja for which he will be arraigned without further delay,” the statement said.

The federal government has included the name of Peoples Democratic Party chairman, Uche Secondus, and other members of the party in the amended charge against former National security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki.

During a court session on Dasuki’s trial on Wednesday, prosecution counsel, Rotimi Jacobs, informed the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, presided by Justice Hussien Baba-Yusuf, of the prosecution’s decision to increase the number of counts in the charge against Dasuki from 19 to 32 counts.

The amended charge indicate that the federal government included some of the names mentioned in the list of alleged looters as beneficiaries of funds allegedly diverted from Dasuki’s office.

The government indicated that the then ruling party, PDP, through some of its members got about N14 billion.

The Senate via its spokesperson, Sabi Abdullahi, has said the summoning of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris, by it is not because of the travails of one of its senators, Dino Melaye.

Idris failed to honour the invitation to appear before the Senate for the second time.

The 1 Division of the Nigerian Army, Kaduna Wednesday, said the crime rate in the North had gone down by about 50 percent due to increase synergy between security agencies and the general public.

The Division’s Chief of Staff, Sanusi Dahiru, a brigadier general, made this known in Kaduna when he received participants of Senior Executive Course 40 of National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPPS).

Dahiru noted that the security threat posed by cattle rustlers, armed bandits, illegal immigrants, Boko Haram and members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria reduced drastically.

A Zimbabwean opposition leader, Nelson Chamisa, has vowed to expel Chinese investors if he wins elections due in July.

“They are busy asset-stripping the resources of the country,” Chamisa said at a May Day rally in the capital, Harare.

Suicide bombers have stormed Libya’s electoral commission in Tripoli, killing at least a dozen people in an attack claimed by Islamic State jihadists.

The bloodshed comes as the international community pushes for elections it hopes will help calm the turmoil that has plagued the north African country since the 2011 ouster of dictator Muammar Gaddafi.

Two armed assailants attacked the electoral commission building, shooting guards and officials before blowing themselves up, interior minister Abdelsalam Ashour told a news conference on Wednesday.

Juan Carlos Cruz, James Hamilton and José Andrés Murillo spoke to reporters on Wednesday after spending five days with the pope at his Vatican hotel. Their press conference was broadcast live in Chile, a sign of the unprecedented nature of their hours of meetings with the pope.

Cruz said that during his private encounter with Francis, the pope acknowledged: “I was part of the problem. I caused this, and I apologise to you.”

“I believe that he was sincere,” Cruz said.
