The Federal Government on Monday launched an upgraded website aimed at bringing governance close to the people.

The Secretary to Government of the Federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha, who declared the website open, stated that the upgraded website was created as a functional platform that would deliver information and policy thrust of the present administration as well as give Nigerians the opportunity to track the activities of government and ask questions where necessary.

Political, religious and traditional leaders from the southeastern part of the country, at the Igbo Summit held at Alex Ekwueme Square, Awka, Anambra, Monday called for a restructuring of the federation.

The summit called for a six-year tenure for the president, five vice presidents to be appointed from the geopolitical zones, rotation of the presidency among the zones, scrapping of the local government system, and creation of additional states for the Southeast. They also agreed on institutionalising the existing six-geopolitical zones as part of the constitution among others.

The leaders attributed the pockets of agitations across the country to a faulty federal structure, which they said has placed some ethnic groups at the mercy of others and demanded a new constitution approved by the people of Nigeria through the process of a constituent assembly and referendum.

The Federal Government has kicked off the reconstruction of the 36-kilometre Ikorodu-Sagamu Road.

Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Mr. Babatunde Fashola (SAN), who performed the exercise on Monday, said the road awarded to Messrs Arab Contractor O.A.O. Nigeria Limited, at the cost of N20.845 billion would relieve the Ikorodu-Sagamu Expressway of traffic congestion and serve as an alternative route to the ever-busy Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, thereby improving the economic development of the country.

He assured residents that the project had already received the needed funds and would not be abandoned.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has raised the alarm over an alleged plan by northern governors to sack teachers and other workers in their states, warning that oppressed workers would vote out hostile political leaders in 2019.

NLC President, Ayuba Wabba, who disclosed this in a statement in Abuja on Monday, equally flayed Governor Nasir el-Rufai of Kaduna for allegedly stating that other northern governors would replicate his policy and retrench teachers and other cadres of workers.

“By announcing that his fellow northern governors would replicate his policy, the NLC President said el-Rufai had already declared his own election and those of the governors he was purportedly speaking for, “a fait accompli,” Wabba added.

The Joint Health Sector Union (JOHESU) says none of its members was involved in an auto crash over the weekend in Benin City.

In a statement signed by JOHESU’s National Secretary, Mrs Florence Ekpebor, and made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Abuja, the union described as false and mischievous speculations that some of its members were involved in a road accident.

The statement identified those involved in the accident as  “outsourced staff working as cleaners in University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH)’’.
