The Big 5: Adeleke wins Osun PDP primary, ‘State Police is part of our manifesto’- APC and other stories

Senator Ademola Adeleke, representing Osun West Senatorial District has been declared the winner of the People’s Democratic (PDP) governorship primary held on Saturday. 

Chairman of the Osun PDP election panel, Gov. Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa who announced the results, said Adeleke scored 1,569 votes while his closest challenger, Akin Ogunbiyi, scored 1,562 votes as well as a former Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Fatai Akinbade, and a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) Nathaniel Oke, who scored 56 votes and 3 votes respectively.


The All Progressives Congress (APC) has said the current efforts by the National Assembly to reform the country’s security architecture by empowering states to own and manage their police, is in line with it’s manifesto.

National Publicity Secretary of the APC, Bolaji Abdullahi, who explained this in an interview with SUNDAY PUNCH in Abuja, said the decision of the National Assembly to begin the legislative process to actualise one of the core issues contained in the restructuring agenda was a demonstration of APC’s abiding faith in the workability of the Nigerian project.


Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar on Saturday formally declared his intention to vie for the office of the President in 2019 under the platform of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

Atiku who made the declaration at a mega rally in Yola, his home state, criticized the All Progressives Congress (APC) for failing Nigeria in areas of economy, security and job security, adding that he would address the problem if elected president and vowed to unseat the All Progressives Congress (APC) government in Adamawa and the federal level.


Former Head of State, Gen. Yakubu Gowon (rtd), has expressed worry over the country’s security situation, stressing that the situation could lead to a religious war if not immediately addressed.

Speaking on Saturday at the Benue People’s House, Makurdi, during a condolence visit to Governor Samuel Ortom and the people of Benue over  recent killings in the state, Gowon said he was disappointed at the handling of the security situation in the country as killings of innocent and unarmed villagers by armed herdsmen, was yet to be stopped by appropriate authorities.

He called on government to make more efforts towards tackling the insecurity situation in the country before it descends into a full religious war.


The Terminus main market in Jos was in the early hours of Saturday razed down by fire.

Although the cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained, Plateau Commissioner of Police, Adie Undie who confirmed the incident, said “this incident happened around 1:30.a.m and our men and that of the Department of Fire Service responded promptly.” 

Chairman of the Plateau Traders Association, Abdulrahman Yusuf, also told newsmen that over 270 shops with properties worth millions of naira were destroyed in the inferno.
