[The Activism Blog] UNICEF says about 1.4m people are prone to cholera in North East Nigeria

The United Nations Children Education Funds (UNICEF), has raised alarm over the health of about 1.4 million Internally Displaced Persons in different IDP camps in the North eastern part of Nigeria.

In a statement on Saturday, September 09, 2017, the agency said, the heavy rains have brought deadly diseases to children in the region. Most of these children are currently malnourished, thereby reducing their immunity.

Also, the ongoing military campaign against the Boko-Haram sect has displaced more than 1.7 million people and left over 3.6 million without access to basic water supply which has increased the spread of cholera.

The rampaging cholera disease has claimed 28 lives, with 837 infections including 145 children under the age of five.

The Ministry of water resources and rural development need to act fast by providing clean and potable water in the region to avoid an epidemic.
