Tecno’s Attai Oguche shares marketing insights for post-pandemic era

Hey guys! Welcome – again – to another tile in the Share of Voice board.

With Share of Voice, we aim to tell stories and have conversations with C-Suite Execs, Directors, Brand Managers, influencers across industries.

On today’s edition, we sit with Attai Oguche, the Deputy Marketing Manager, Tecno Mobile Nigeria who takes us through his personal journey and his professional successes.

Hello Attai! Let’s start with how you have been navigating this period, especially as we have to do things differently now

It is like a new chapter from a new book; strange how things change quickly. You notice signs like NO MASK NO ENTRY, you see an old friend you can only wave, you can’t visit the old, etc.

What are the ideas/solutions you hold dearly as you fight this pandemic?

The pandemic is exposing a lot. Topics that would have been considered secondary are now at the forefront – self-realisation; working remotely; mandatory stay at home, etc. Flights have been grounded worldwide; hotel, pilgrimage, and tourist sites are all empty.

We now realise that that it’s fine to work from home, its possible to seal up deals through zoom video call, virtual product launches across various brands, virtual tourism are all possible.

As a marketer, these should spur you into action in providing solutions to these new opportunities.

What new things are you doing at Tecno that will help your customers navigate this period? Especially when you consider their changing needs.

We have since strengthened our offline logistic distribution network nationwide. With a click of a button, we will deliver their item at your doorstep. In as much as we still have active COVID-19 cases, we don’t want our customers risking their health to get our products.

We are democratising the smartphone industry. For a year, we have been equipping our smartphones with the latest technology available, without compromising quality and draining customers’ pockets.

These moves directly translate to fast information in your palms, and you will agree with me that an informed person is an embodiment of knowledge and knowledge is power.

How has your professional journey been? The challenges, the wins

My professonial journey has been quite interesting. I stayed a better part of my life in Northern Nigeria, before I went to Pan-African University (Lagos business school).

I got a job in one of the foremost experiential marketing agencies in Lagos. I worked on 29 different brands – Tecno was one of them – and was later drafted as in-house staff.

When I talk about the wins, I remember how I have been part of the team that transformed the Tecno brand to what it is today.

Imagine Attai leading Nigeria’s Marketing industry…

I will simply advise all marketers alike not to take their feet off the pedal in times like this. Use the window to experiment as much as you can; you could discover something new. For example, whoever knew virtual meetings will be this popular? It just means future unnecessary business trips will be cut off, and it’s possible to collaborate remotely. It’s also possible to hire an expert anywhere in the world and make him/her work remotely without bothering to hire the skilled worker as an expatriate.

In one word, how will it be for you, post-pandemic?

I remain optimistic.

You have a group of teenagers wanting to be like you now. Imagine this and tell us the ideas you will want them to turn into sustainable solutions.

You are never too young to start making an impact. Instead of playing video games for hours, spend similar hours on YouTube to learn a new skill. I advise teens to keep themselves busy in a positive way .

What is that one question you have never been asked?

No one has ever asked me if know how to cook. Smiles.
