Super Eagles coach Salisu Yusuf caught taking $1000 bribe on camera

Salisu Yussuf

Chief Coach of the Nigerian National Football team, Salisu Yusuf was filmed receiving $1000 in September 2017 from an undercover Ghanian journalist Anas Aremayaw Anas posing as a football agent to some players he wanted to be selected for the then upcoming African Nations Championship CHAN.

The video was released to BBC African Eye and it is surely a dent on the image of Yusuf and Nigerian football – someone who is set to lead Nigeria to the upcoming Olympics in 2020. It is clearly stated in the FIFA and NFF Code of Ethics that “officials should not engage in any activity that gives rise to suspicion and collect any cash gifts”.

However, Yusuf denies any wrong-doing and there is no suggestion that the money he took, impacted his player selection and was recorded stating that team selection was based on performance.

In his statement to the BBC, Yusuf said he never promised or committed to selecting players for the games, and the money was offered to him – he never asked. Yusuf believes the FIFA Code allows for gifts and felt it did not apply in his case.

It remains to be known what the NFF will do to Yusuf but many Nigerians will agree that his defence is incredibly silly. He should never have taken the cash (he earns N3m monthly from the NFF), never allowed the conversation to persist. We all hope the NFF stands for what is right by dismissing him or better still he resigns, to show integrity.
