#YNaija2015Review: Wizkid vs Skales, Sugabelly vs everyone… See the hottest Twitter fights of 2015

Twitter fights are so 2010 we hear you say.

But if they are so out of fashion like we tell ourselves, how come barely a day passes without some level of back and forth erupting on those mean streets.

Some are nipped at the bud the moment they begin to show, others explode into full blown war.

We live for them, these moments of genuine conflict.

We document them so that at a time such as this, we are able to bring you the definitive list of the 10 most interesting fights of the year. Presented in no particular order.

Wizkid vs Skales

Wizkid and Skales were once jointly tipped as the future of Nigerian music. While Wizkid has largely lived up to the promise in terms of commercial success, until this year, when Skales finally landed with Man of the year, he was yet to put out an album. In the run up to the album release, Skales sent a tweet asking for guest appearances fans would like to see on the album. Someone mentioned his former EME label mate Wizkid, an option Skales immediately dismissed. Wizkid caught wind of it, and it was all out war between the duo.

Sugabelly vs Nigerian Twitter

If we had a Naira for every time Sugabelly was at the centre of a Twitter storm, we’d be going toe to toe bank balance wise with some of the lucky recipients of Sambo Dasuki’s generosity. We exaggerate but for those who love their Twitter fights, Sugabelly is the gift that keeps on giving. Whether she is calling out some dude who slid into her DMs demanding she answer the call of the ‘’preek’’, dishing casually on forgetting N200,000 in her bag or gloating at the tweep who doesn’t quite know if his car is a Honda or Mercedes, she has been consistent. The biggest storm however was when she detailed claims of being sexually abused by members of the Audu clan following the death of its patriarch Prince Abubakar and got hate from everyone from family members to sympathizers. That particular saga is still ongoing.

Burna Boy vs MTV Base

The MAMA nominations were announced in July and the socially awkward Burna Boy took to Twitter (where else?) to express his feelings about not being nominated in any of the major categories. The MTV Base Africa handle however had the perfect response for him, throwing up a meme that immediately settled the matter.

Psquare vs Soundcity

One half of pop duo Psquare, Peter Okoye made it known via Twitter that music and lifestyle station Soundcity had stopped playing their music videos. Soundcity replied that they only did so because Psquare insisted the music station pay a certain amount before performing at their year-end concert. Jude Okoye, manager of the twin brothers took it up from there, going on a rant that Soundcity has not been supportive of the Psquare band. In the end both parties agreed not to work with the other.

#KenyansVsNigerians

This one was epic as Nigerians and Kenya took to Twitter to express all of their observations, frustrations and misgivings about the other. The KenyansVsNigerians hashtag was for a few days, the funniest thing on the internet. A brutal, dark but richly comical free for all, everyone had something to say and everyone made sure they said it.

Dino Melaye vs. Sahara Reporters

Senator Dino Melaye came under fire when Sahara Reporters, scourge of shifty public officials revealed that he maintained a United States bank account as a serving senator, a violation of  Nigeria’s Code of Conduct for elected officials. Melaye refused to go down without a fight and threatened legal action while accusing SR of not being registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission.

Ben Murray Bruce vs Sahara Reporters

The common sense senator was far from impressed when the senate began tinkering seriously with the idea of passing an anti-social media bill and Sahara Reporters accused him of having a ‘’comprehension problem’’ and supporting the bill by helping to push it to second reading. Senator Bruce fired back, denying any such support while stating that SR has a ‘’lying problem.’’

@Uduakisbae vs @MoshoodEdewor

This one had everything; scandal; leaked DMs, scorned woman, a gay brother, phone records. Everything. A dude with the handle @MoshoodEdewor dared to quote some homo/transphobic slur against Caitlyn Jenner. Some chick, @UduakIsBae was having none of it. He called her ugly (in her DMs though, she was the ‘’swaggiest lady’’), she went to town on his poor behind, releasing details of their private conversations on and off Twitter and outed his brother as a gay man. We are still reeling from the audacity of it all.

Davido vs J Fem

Because this list wouldn’t be complete without Davido. Few days ago music site notjustok.com published a list of the top producers of 2015. Nothing major, nothing out of the ordinary. Until Davido sent out a tweet, congratulating some producers who made the list and at the same time mocking J Fem who worked on his hit, Owo ni koko for missing the cut. J Fem clapped back using strong terms like ingrate, cruel and smellos. Something tells us we haven’t seen the last of this.

Drake vs Meek Mill

This one started on Twitter and ended in the studio. The Drake vs Meek Mill implosion started when Mill in a series of tweets, accused Drake of ghost writing his lyrics. Drake clapped back with a response, a lukewarm song titled Charged up. It didn’t have the expected effect so he came up with Back to back a stronger reply that put Meek Mill in his place and was nominated for a Grammy award later in the year. Meek Mill’s anticipated reply, Wanna know came with a fizzle impressing no one anywhere. Mill may have won the girl but Drake is winning the lyrical battle.
